Condom Break

Hello - I write this with a great sense of guilt and shame. I had sex with a CSW in Miami and while I had a condom on, mid-way through the process the condom tore. I had not realized this and went on for another 5-7 minutes. After this time had passed, she pulled out and I realized that the condom tore. Note that I had not ejaculated yet.

I replaced the condom and proceeded to get oral sex till I climaxed.

Of course, this whole situation has caused a lot of anxiety since I exposed myself to STDs given my penis was exposed for a few minutes (note that I am not circumcised).

I have read through the forum and it appears that the risk is low of contracting HIV but I understand that there is risk nevertheless.

I do have some questions though - and would greatly appreciate any thoughts:

1. I have no way of knowing if the girl in question is HIV+; I have read that getting PEP is an option within the first 72 hours. Is this recommended?

2. What exactly is my risk of contracting HIV? I read somewhere that an uncircumcised male has a higher risk. Given I was exposed for 5-7 minutes, is that enough time for the virus to pass through to me?

Of course, this is all I can think about and am wondering how bad this situation is....

Many thanks to anyone that can help with any information. Thanks.

Your overall risk isn't significantly high, but it's a risk none the less.  The decision to seek out PEP would be a personal one, and one you'd have to discuss with a doctor, to weigh the benefits vs the risks.  You're correct that PEP must be started within 72 hours of the exposure, and the sooner, the better.

Typically, PEP is reserved for people who have had an exposure with a KNOWN + person, but again, it's your call.  I can understand the worry and the desire to take precautions.

The chance is low but I would get PEP if possible.

1. Not in your situation, but it's still a personal decision after speaking to a Dr.
2. It was a risk

28 day DUO test or 6-8 week antibody test will give you a good indication but 3 month antibody test is conclusive.
