Cant even concentrate

My story is about 5 months ago, I had unprotected vaginal sex with a girl of unknown status. We were both really drunk and my phone was dead. When i went to put my number in her phone i think i skipped a number or two so no i do not have any way of even getting in touch with this girl to ask her of her status and such. I am a white circumsized male living in the U.S. and she is a white female who attends a university. I have been reading a lot on this website and understand that the risk of me contracting HIV is very low. Something like 1 out of  a few thousand. My question is if that number is so low, how do so many thousands of people continue to get HIV every year?
Also, I will get tested as soon as I can but what can I do in the mean time to ease my nerves? I can't sleep, eat, or even concentrate on anything. This is particularly a problem because I have school and work to keep up with. Please any feedback will help.

It helped me to look at threads in the expert forum over similar situations. Dr. HHH in particular really knows how to put one's risk (or lack thereof in my case) in perspective.

Ok I went and got tested today my results should be in tomorow if i call for them. Of course I will.

To my next topic is that even with knowing all the odds are most likely on my side I still feel the feeling of no hope. I kno this is paranoia but I would appreciate and advice on methods of calming myself down.

I appreciate all the positive feedback you have all given me. It has done a little to calm me down but I wont rest easy until i take the test and get my results back. And yes this stress is not worth it at all. I feel like such a moron to have put my future in danger like that. It is just so nerve racking but its nice to know that there are people that can sympathize with me. Thank you all

Anxiety can cause very real physical symptoms...not to mention the obvious mental ones that you are already experiencing.

As the other posters have told you...the odds are very much in your favor. You did place yourself at risk...therefore testing is a good idea.  You can get tested right away for a conclusive result...as 3 months post exposure is conclusive.  Just go get a standard antibody test at any walk-in clinic, like Planned Parenthood.  You can do a rapid test where you will have the results on the spot...so you can finally put this behind you and rest easy.

Most importantly...be sure not to put yourself in this position again.  I'm sure you'd agree that the stress certainly isn't worth a few minutes of pleasure.  Not to mention the risk of an unwanted pregnancy.  There are all kinds of repercussions from one epsiode of unprotected sex that could potentially change your life forever.

Condoms work when used consistently and correctly.

Be sure to post your results after your test.  You will likely be just fine.

"My question is if that number is so low, how do so many thousands of people continue to get HIV every year?"

Because they engage in repeated risk behaviors. The more times you have unprotected sex the more likely it is you will be infected.

And yes you can infected from a one time exposure, but the vast majority do not. People like yourself, you can recognize potential risk from a one-off exposure and take appropriate actions, including protecting yourself in the future with consistent condom use, are not very likely to contract HIV.

Trust me.  Relax.

Like I said it not a game of statistics but the odds are strongly on your side.

Get tested for conclusive results and get on with your life.

Post your negative results.

Thank you those words are reassuring but I just cant seem to get out of my head that I am that one. Its killing me. I want to tell people I know about it but I am to embarrassed and scared so basically I have just been living a nightmare in my head with no escape from my own thoughts.

Hey there,

I'm in a similar situation.

It it was 5 months ago go get tested for conclusive results.

Test are conclusive after 13 weeks.

Relax as stress can kill you and cause syptoms that polarize the situation.

It is not a numbers game or a game of odds because it only takes one incident but the odds of a partner of unknow status of having HIV who isnt a sex worker is slim and furthermore contracting HIV assuming that a parter was is also difficult.

Get tested, be confident and relax.

You'll be fine.

I also await results.
