ELISA Antibody Test Coupled with PCR RNA Test

Hey guys,

I'm trying to find some information. What are the pros and cons of using a PCR RNA Test coupled with a standard antibody test in determining HIV status in someone who has tested negative at 16 weeks but shows symptoms of asymptomatic infection with no other causes (generalized lymphadenopathy)?

12 weeks in conclusive for 3rd generation. RNA or 4th generation is conclusive at 28 days.

You would need an RNA/anitbody test like Vance has mentioned. Not a stand alone as RNA test are prone to false positives.

Got ya. The reason I ask is because my physician ordered it as well as an antibody test. I have read about false positives, and just wanted your take on using it coupled with the ELISA.

Thanks for your reply. Just to check, is there anything wrong with using the RNA test, though?
