exposure but negative test

I was in a relationship where I found out the male was an addict. I was exposed to him through sex and was tested 11 months after we last were together and had a negative result.  This was a year ago.  It is just about time for my next annual appointment where I will request another test, and I was told  by a friend last night that he has tested positive and is sick.  Is it possible the negative test was wrong, or was I just lucky?  Should it have shown up in 11 months?
