Hello, I went to an STD clinic to get tested. I’ve had several sexual partners and used condoms with all except two. One is on PREP and another is a trusted friend who said he was neg. He texted me last weekend with a pic of his neg HIV test result. The doctor told me I got a “faint line” positive result on my HIV antibody test, meaning it’s possible I have it, so she took labs. I’m freaking out, so I took the Oraquick test twice yesterday, both results were totally neg (no faint line even). I have no symptoms of HIV. And the last time I had sex with anyone else without a condom was 4 months ago, meaning the Oraquick would for sure have picked it up. What I’m wondering is, do you think it’s a false positive on that test? The doctors asked me why I wasn’t on Prep, and I said the amount of sex I have and my general safety practices didn’t seem to warrant taking a daily drug. Is it possible the doctor lied to me to scare me into taking Prep? It seems crazy, but I don’t know how I could have gotten it, if, in the last three months, I’ve been with one guy on Prep, and another guy who was tested neg. For sure this experience has scared me into NOT ever having casual sex, and never without a condom again... But I’m just so confused how I got two negative results (when it should be 95% effective after 4 weeks), and the only risk exposure tested negative. Any thoughts you might have for me would be really reassuring to me as I wait for the results of the blood test.
