Health questions

Hello Dr.

I'm a male from Nigeria and i'm afraid i may be at risk from HIV after an encounter i had with a sex worker in Lagos Nigeria 2 and half years ago. I would start by saying that most of the sexual intercourse was vaginal, and i used a condom untill i realised that when she was on top of me for (approx.1-2 mins) that the condom had broken, i stood up immediately and changed the condom and continued. There was no spillage as i could recall, and that was just that 1 incident.

But my utmost fear arose when i realised that after a few weeks or maybe months i experienced severe sore throat, diarrhea, dry cough and pain in my chest when i coughed, rashes on my tongue and stomach area all this happened all at the same time.

To be sincere with you, i have never had an HIV test after this incident apparently becuase of the fear of getting the bad news. Please all i ask for is to have an idea of the chances of contracting HIV after this one incident.

It would be of great assistance if you reply message

yours faithfully,

Firstly, there are no doctors here, this is the support forum.

You need to test. You had an exposure and you need to test to know instead of guessing and living with the anxiety. Let me ask you a question - Is the anxiety for a day until your test result comes back not better than living with it every day? I am 100% confident it's worth it and advisable. You have already surpassed the required window period for testing, all you need to do is just go and get tested, I promise - It would be sheer relief. I and many posters have been there, we can tell you getting to know your result is like a major monkey off your back.

Symptoms don't mean any thing, they never had and never will be. We have seen some crazy amount of posters complaining about every symptom. However, obtaining a negative result at the end of the day to realize that all symptoms were either coincidental or mere result of anxiety.

Go ahead brother, get tested. I wish you good luck.
