Hello,
Stupidly, I slept with an allegedly promiscuous girl without a condom when I was drunk. This was a mistake. After the act I worred that I might have caught an STD such as HIV. No symptoms arose after the act however. I waited a little over 4 months and then I took a rapid saliva based HIV test. I think it was the Oraquick or Orasure (or are they the same?)
I only swabbed the stick in my lower gums. Also, it seems that I stuck it in that area for less than 20 seconds or so. The HIV counselor did not object to my actions, but i'm not sure he was watching me closely. Given the circumstances, I was a little anxious at the time and I don't remember him saying anyting about swiping the upper gums. After the test I went online and I noticed that websites say that you are supposed to do upper and lower gum swabs. Also some said to swipe for 30 sec to 2 min. This worries me because I fear I did not take the test correctly.
Anyway, 20 minutes later, the test came out negative, but I because did not slide the OraQuick on my upper gums and I did not keep the device in a my mouth for long, I am worried that this was a false negative. Does this matter? Could this be a false negative? Do I have anything to worry about and should I get tested again?
Thanks you,
Resto
