Greetings,
I'm a medical doctor from Indonesia. Recently (7 hours ago) I'm injured by a needlestick injury when I'm giving a Hep-B shot to a group of workers in a company. It happen AFTER I injected the vaccine, and trying to put the needle-cap back, I accidentaly scratched my finger with that used syringe. After the incident I quickly washed the wound with an alcohol swab, and report it to the supervisor... The supervisor just asked me only to check the hep-c,hep-b, an d hiv status at the 3 and 6 month mark. I asked if I should take a PEP, and the supervisor didn't recomendded it, since the hep-c and hiv status of the worker is unknown...As far as I know, it is a large company where they do a routine MCU for all the workers, and from the looks of the worker, he looked healthy... Well, I'm not quite satisfy with the supervisors suggestion, as I'm very worried of the infection, I'm visiting a local hospital, and ask if there are any PEP for HIV, and they got no clues of it. They said that there's nothing that they could do, instead of laboratory exam and that's it. They would treat if the result are positive first. And I think "really? the hell?"... and it the end, they just giving me suggestion to check it at the 3 and 6 month mark...
1. What are my chance of getting those infections?
2. Is it really not necessary to took a PEP based on my case?
3. Is it really that hard to get that PEP, as this case (for me) is an emergency...
thank you very much
