Enlarged Heart

Was having chest pains so I went to the cardiologist.  He gave me chest xray, stress test, an echo, and some bloodwork done.  I went to have the results read to me and he said everything was fine and the pain was probably the chest wall.  Then i received a call two days later saying something on the echo showed something on the right side might be enlarged but hes not sure and it might have been done at the wrong angle or something so he wants me to get an MRI to make sure.  Question is what are the odds of a 22 yr old of having serious heart problems and if i do have an enlarged heart what does that mean do you get surgery for that or what?

Good news!  To put something in perspective, if you had had an enlarged heart, surgery may be contraindicated as enlarged heart can make any surgical intervention a very high risk...done usually in a life or death situation.

Take care and wish you well going forward.

Yes I will keep you posted MRI is being set up now and going through insurance so hopefully it is covered and can be done this week.

Age is really irrelevant I'm afraid, you can be born with a problem and you can't get much younger than that. It's good if problems are being discovered so they can have the best treatment aimed at them. Depending on the cause of the condition, you may require surgery or you may not. It's not worth guessing the cause, but rather wait until further tests have been done. The MRI could still reveal no enlargement.
Please will you keep us informed as to what they discover?

Oh no! You dont need any surgery!! Enlarged heart (cardiomegaly)is not a disease, but rather a symptom of another condition,  weakening of the heart muscle, coronary artery disease, heart valve problems, abnormal heart rhythms, etc.

Wait and see and stay positive!  But better to know and take care of it in an early  stage, what ever it is.

My Best!
