Hello, newbie here.
13 weeks ago I had sudden swelling of both ankles (no pain involved). Thought this in some way was a result of recent physical activity (boxing class 1x week). 1st doc said fallen arches (incorrect-arches are fine). 2nd doc -orthopedist, foot structure is fine. 3rd doc checked for blood clots in the legs-no sign of clots. After I insisted on more info with regard to the swelling, she basically threw her hands up and said she had no clue, try an anti-inflammatory. I pushed and she referred to a rheumatologist (doc 4). Doc 4 says I no way have any sort of arthritis (didn't really think so) but she listens to heart quite a while. Calls in a collegue who also spends some time listening. She felt there were some unusual noises. Started asking questions about coughing -have GERD and allergies, so yes I cough. Chest pain-again, GERD..etc. I have always felt like I sometimes can't catch my breath (almost a hyperventilating type thing) but it has always been dismissed by the docs (first symptoms of cardiomyopathy?). I have an echo scheduled for next week.
Everything i've read so far has indicated the swelling is more an indication of heart failure rather than the early symptoms of cardiomyopathy. Do I have reason to worry that extensive damage has already occured? (Father died of heart attack in his early 60's, but was overweight and smoked)
