Terrified!

I am going in for a cardiac ablation in 2 weeks and was feeling only slightly nervous until I read some comments about how the burning hurts and is very intense. I know I will be only mildly sedated and I have an overactive vagal response so am worried about that.  I know I can't live with these continuous runs of pvcs anymore as it is limiting my life drastically. If anyone could shed any light on this, I would greatly appreciate the support.

Well, it's over. In the procedure room, the EP said it was very successful. Then in post op, the pvcs returned with a vengeance. He isn't sure if it is due to swelling and irritation of the heart or of the procedure was unsuccessful. He said I may need a second ablation. I now have chest discomfort but not much pain in the groin which is good. The sedation was minimal and they couldn't increase it because they were worried the pvcs would go away.  All in all, I am pleased so far with recovery but the procedure was much harder than I expected : ( Hoping that the pvcs decrease as my heart heals and I can get on with my life!

Hi there,

I had Cardiac Ablation for PSVT's in 2007.  The procedure took about 3 hours and I was completely sedated and do not have any recollection of anything.  I had some mild discomfort at the groin area where they make small cuts (both sides) and had to stay very still and only discharged the next day.

But I remember how great I felt when I woke up and my heart rate was slow and normal and I never had any PSVT's again.

You'll be all right.  All the best!

It may be that you have to be conscious to accomplish the procedure. But you can talk with your doctor, perhaps you anesthesiologist and let them know your are worried about pain and ask that they sedate you as much as possible.
