An echo test is an ultra sound procedure that monitors the heart's wall movements in realtime and is able to measure dimensions of heart chambers and heart walls. The integrity of the heart's structure and functionalitry is shown and calculated. If the heart wall movement is impaired, the amount of blood pumped out with each heartbeat is reduced. If the heart contractions are weak and seriously impaired, and the amount of blood pumped out with each stroke is less than 29% that is medically termed as heart failure as that amount pumped is usually not enough to meet the system's demand for blood/oxygen.
Blood flow is observed and and any back flow of blood through the one-way valve is noted and the leakage is classified as mild to severe.
The test is non-invasive and lasts for about 40 minutes for the patient in an inclined position. There are electrodes attached to the chest area, and the technologist moves a hand held transducer to different areas of the heart
