Hi macaela.
I'm so sorry for your loss of your baby boy.
In the absence of an autopsy report, it is very difficult to
make any firm determination or to even offer an educated opinion.
If you had not noticed any red pinpoint spots on his chest area, from before,
chances are that he did not have petechiae from birth, but rather developed this later, which does not exclude the possibility of some congenital
underlying heart abnormality.
If his death was determined to be SIDS (a dx of exclusion by having ruled out other causes) with an autopsy, it seems that the petechial presentation would be considered non-specific and the heart "unremarkable".
This is all I can offer at this time.
Please feel free to share any more details if you wish.
God Bless you. My thoughts and Prayers are with you.
(I lost my younger brother and my mom earlier this year)

oh dear, I really am truly sorry to hear about your sad loss :(
I am not sure about the circumstances and whether you had a post mortem? Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) involving Petechiae is mostly caused by breathing problems, giving trauma to the heart. This could be a problem with the airways, being obstructed. This could have caused heart failure quite quickly and fluid would build in the lungs making breathing less effective.
Did your child not have a cough or seem to be breathing shallow? I think the problem would have occurred pretty soon after birth.
