High BP at age of 23

Hi,
My son is 23, single, non smoker, non drinker, student. He did not have BP before 8 months. His BP range is 140-96 average. Doctor did some test of blood and urine and also did sonography and found nothing. He proscribed Atenolol 50 mg (half tablet a day).
Do you think he should go for some more tests to know the reason of high BP?
Does he have any alternative of medication? like controlled exercise, Diet etc.
Doctor said, BP is the result of stress, but stress is a part of modern life.
Thanks

Lifestyle changes, diet and exercise can help manage blood pressure.  But at any rate, the main thing is to get his blood pressure down. Even if that means medication.  Take care, Ally

Hi All,
Updates..................
This morning he took a half tablet of Atenolol 50 mg. He measured after 45 minutes walk and it dropped to 122-85 and pulse 75. Before BP range was 140-96 average for last 2 months.
But is it advisable for him to go on medication at the age of 23?
We want to findout the reason. Please suggets some other tests.
Thanks for support.

hi, i can tell you my bp is from stress also. most the time its low 95/55 but when under stress it runs 150/90.

i would ask for a few test to be run. like they have a 24 hour bp monitor he can wear takes bp every 30 mins in day and at night it takes it every hour. he would have to wear it 24 hours not sure how he would be with that.

has he had a heart echo a very easy test you just lay there while they take pics of heart to make sure its the size it should be, it can show sighn if your bp has been high for a while or if there is a problem with the values /walls of heart.

am sure theres other test but thoses are the ones they did on me when my bp was high at times.

good luck and i understand your concern our kids are our Hearts. Barbara
