I have heard of this. One person on this message board on meds (including Flecainide) for 1-1/2 years, then electro-converted. I don't think they really stop your heart -- the voltage just readjusts it. I've had it done twice, tho not my favorite thing, way better than being in Afib with 180 heart rate. I was on Atenolol (beta blocker) for 7 years that controlled my Afib. Now added Norpace CR (antiarrythmic). I took it for one week at home, then went in, had an ekg and was put on a 30 event monitor. The reasoning is any side effects will show up after a week. Then a 3 months appt with another ekg. So far, so good. No Afib for 6 months, minimal side effects. I am taking Coumadin tho. Have you had a Chas 2 assessment for stroke risk? I am assuming you are now in Afib -- if so you should be on some kind of a blood thinner even if it's just asprin. Good luck.
Thanks. I don't intend to start the flecainide until I know for sure what to expect and the best way to handle it. Doing the cardioversion after being on the drug seems to be a bit of a different wrinkle. Hope your treatment works.
I have had several "restarts", obviously none were permanent. I was always on atrial run with a medication fist.
The first time I took just a beta blocker Toprol 50 MG.
The second time (about a year later) I was on Propafenone 220 mg three times a day.
The third time (about 3 years later) I was Rythmol SR 425 MG twice a day. I was on a monitor when I started this medication.
My cardiologist required hospitalization for start-up on Flecainide, and stronger medications. I have never used Flecainide.
I have read of others starting Flecainide "at home".
