Enlarged Heart

My 19 yr old son was admitted to the hospital on  Friday. His heart afib, His organs were failing as well. He was drinking very high caffeinated soda's as well as energy drinks daily allot of caffeine, Everyone told him to stop drinking so many. All he did was stay in his room playing video games or on the pc from 11 am til 5 am the next day. He ate well, rarely drank any water, then a month ago, he stopped eating, vomited anything he drank or ate. Then he started drinking a gal of water a day, or chewing on gum or candy. Was burping allot, then his heart was beating fast so we took him in. Now I'm told he has an enlarged heart. Where did this come from? He's the healthiest one in the family. He's had maybe three colds since birth. Could all the caffeine and other ingredients do this to him?

What's enlarged about his heart?  That can mean a few things.

What type of afib...was it lone afib or is it still in afib?  If it's not in afib anymore, how did they correct it?

severe dehydration can cause afib, and arrhythmia.  Chronic high doses of caffeine will dehydrate (it's a diuretic) and this depletes electrolytes, couple that with poor diet and it's a recipe for disaster.  Probably low on all the electrolytes and the heart will just be a mess and cause other organ problems.

BUt I'm purely guessing.  This should be coming from his cardiologist.  These people are so busy they won't spend the time with you to identify the root cause unless you press for it.  You will have to be direct with the medical people and specifically ask them what is the root cause.  Otherwise they will do just enough to get him stable then turf him to the next phase.
