Vertex

Hi all,
Have gone through the standerd treatment for 3 months without a significant lowering of viral load. Back to feeling good again, but at a loss as to what the future brings. I'm reading about the Vertex trials and wonder if anyone has participated.

I treated with the Vertex PI and I am undetectable 12 weeks post treatment.  There are many people here that have treated and quite a few threads have been posted about it.

I was null, well, actually I'd gone UP on VL, at 12 wks and yet UND at 24.

they will want to cut you off tx, but new research shows that as many as 20% of type 1as still will reach SVR if they treat out 72 weeks to make up for the slow response.
that's not the 50% rate the early responders have, but it still means 2 in 10 can still get to SVR.

the question is, has anything been interferring with your absorption.
Riba absorbs better with some fat in the meal, but also without much fiber around.
Fiber tends carry it off unabsorbed.

As soon as I knew this, and altered my meals accordingly, my VL began to drop like a rock. If you have any other infections going, this can also slow your response.
I also had an inflammed gall bladder. They say this didn't matter...
but anytime your body is having to make antibodies for a necrotic or imflammed tissue, it detracts from how well it can fight other things. There are only so many antibodies your blood can make or carry is why.
So if you have any of the above occuring you may want to think twice before quitting.

if you could enroll in the Vertex's VX-950 triel, there is a 66% chance you will get Teleprevir. A 33% chance you will get a placebo. This is the way it was explained to me by a tech who works at one of the clinical trials. It's like gambling I guess, except that you have better odds than the house in this particular case. Still, there's that 1/3 chance you will get a placebo. Are you a gambler or does the doctor feel you can wait until 2010 when it should be publically released?

You like myself showed a "null response". Didn't drop our viral load by at least 2 log in 12 weeks of treatment. We  do not respond to the interferon. It doesn't do what is should in our bodies. (Kill off the virus). So we will need to add additional meds to supplement the action of the interferon. I am also waiting for new treatment. But because of low platelet count won't be able to be part of a trial and will have to wait for it to come on the market.

Best of luck with your retreatment!
