Blood Test Results Question

I had a physical on Friday (Sept 14), they said I was do for a tetanus shot. The doctor also wanted me to do blood work to see if my vaccinations are up to date. So I get my tetanus shot and then go get blood drawn. I get a call a week later from the doctor saying my liver is swollen or something and he said it looks like there might be Hepatitus C anti bodies in my blood. So, I need to schedule more tests. I don't see how anyway possible I could have Hepatitis C, I've had only one sexual partner, my wife, my whole life, only needles that have been in me are from treatments done by hospitals. I was in the ER about a month ago for cellulitis in my lef. They did blood work to make sure it didn't get in my blood. When they had the test results they called me and said my blood was fine nothing abnormal at all in my blood. My wife was in the ER in July of 2012, and she had blood work taken as well and nothing ab normal showed up for her either. If I have hepatitis C, wouldn't it have shown up in the blood work done from the ER, and I really don't see how I could have it anyways. I'm healthy, wife is to. Would the tetanus shot have done anything to the blood test?

If you are saying your HCV antibody test is still positive, that is normal. We never get rid of the antibodies even when cured. If you are talking about an RNA test (viral load), then it has come back. However, my guess is the doc did an antibody test although I don't know why he would do that if he knows your medical history. Find out which test you had.

I recently went into my PCP for yearly check up. Did blood work and came back as positive for Hep C. I did have Hep C a long time ago over 15 years ago. Got it take care of it and it was gone by having  a liver biopsy done. Doctor wants me to come back to get another test to see if it is positive. Could it show because I had it before or do you think I contracted it again? Thank you so much for you help!

My liver tests came back normal even though I had hep. It got my hopes up while waiting for blood work. I had the liver enzyme in blood work at the hospital before getting my full panel done. My number is at 3000 so I guess that has so,ething to do with it?

Good luck CT hope you dont have it but if you tested positive for the antibodies it means you did at SOME point in your life but perhaps your immune system killed it off on it's own. That is why you need more testing.

If youve been to the dentist or had a medical procedure or any one of a ton of things.....it's possible to have.

Most of us had NO clue we had it we were fine till something blipped on a blood test and clued the doctors off.  It ***** but it's not the worst disease to have there is a great rate of cure these days.

Still waiting for the results of my Hep C blood test. My results for HIV came back negative.

In response to idyllic, the test is called a titer, I got the results for that, I'm all up to date on my vaccines but the HEP C came back as Reactive, so just waiting to hear back from the follow up blood work results.

I was wondering how they test to see what vaccines you have had in the past? With some of them could it by seeing if you have the antibody? Maybe that is how this all got started.

There are vaccines for Hepatitis A and B and when all this is over maybe you can get vaccinated for them.

Keep us informed :)

I go today to get more blood drawn. Got to talk to the nurse practitioner finally who ordered the tests before and the new ones. He said the blood test came back as hepatitis C positive and my life enzymes were slightly high butbarely, but he wants to see if I have hepatitis C now or previously did. So, today I'm getting blood drawn that will test for hepatitis C, HIV, and so on. Still confused about the first blood test because it was to see what vaccines I've had already because need the info for school but instead I get this hepatitis C info.

This statement in your post is the reason there is so much speculation as to whether you have HCV or why a doctor would wonder if you do.

Since you don't know if the doctor tested for HCV Antibody when he ran your labs, something had to leap out to make him wonder about it.

Either way, I am glad you are going tomorrow for further testing. Perhaps you can clarify what labs he did the first time (and the exact results)  and which ones he wants to do this time.

Best of luck. I hope you are OK and you post when you
have more info :)

Unfortunately many of us never had any liver enzyme tests because we felt fine.
Liver disease and hep C can sneak up on you while not showing any signs.
I wasn't diagnosed until I was seriously ill.

Yes, call back Monday. Be proactive.

I've never had any liver enzyme tests because I've never had anything wrong with me. This blood test was to check and see what immunizations I've had because I have papers for college that needs my immunization records. I called the doctor or rather nurse practitioner, and the lady at the desk said, "Oh he needs to go over your test result again and he'll give you a call back." This is probably the 4th or 5th thing they've done that makes me wonder if anyone at this office is even proffesionally trained in anything they do there. No one called me back, so I'm calling again Monday.

My husband had HCV since the mid-80s and never had elevated enzymes.  And he drank and did drugs up until the day he died.

My enzymes however were in in the mid-200 range.

That is why I wouldn't just trust LFTs to try and decide if you have HCV.

And to caveat on what I previously said I don't think saying the OP probably has nothing to worry about was a good choice of words.  I speak from my own experience and that doesn't correlate to all experiences.  I don't know whether the OP does or does not have HCV and it wouldn't be wise to for his thinking to hinge on the results of a liver enzyme test anyway.  He needs a PCR to rule it out.

" If the immune system does eradicate the virus after a 6 month period then it is considered chronic HCV and a person with chronic HCV can have varying degrees of elevated liver enzymes but they are usually elevated to some degree regardless, unless the person has cirrhosis and that's a another story.  If they did run a liver enzyme test and you have the results are they normal?  If so, doubt you have anything to worry about.

Should read if the immune system does NOT.

Generally speaking, those with chronic HCV do not have enzymes in the normal low range. Excluding cirrhotics, they are usually elevated, sometimes not much but they are not in the teens or twenties as a rule.  Alcohol use or some supplements elevate liver enzymes in of itself, but generally speaking most people with HCV will have elevated enzymes. Wouldn't you agree that nygirl?

No not true at all you can certainly have normal enzymes and be HCV positive.

You mention you had a series of blood tests done recently.  Do you know if they did a liver enzyme (ALT & AST) test?  Usually if a person has acute HCV and acute is considered within in the first 6 months after exposure, the liver enzymes are very elevated and they will decrease in time and eventually return to normal if your own immune system eradicates the virus.  If the immune system does eradicate the virus after a 6 month period then it is considered chronic HCV and a person with chronic HCV can have varying degrees of elevated liver enzymes but they are usually elevated to some degree regardless, unless the person has cirrhosis and that's a another story.  If they did run a liver enzyme test and you have the results are they normal?  If so, doubt you have anything to worry about.

I don't see how you can worry like this with such little information. Why not have your doctor fax you your lab results. That way you can see the tests he performed. Or maybe you can drop by his office and pick them up. Your medical records are yours and this is a good habit to get into anyway.

Nobody wants this virus.
Not everyone gets sick from it, but some do.

It certainly could have been from a dentist when you were young and nobody knew about hep c. It really doesn't matter how you got it.
Right now you don't even know for sure IF you have it.

Get tested and go from there.

No, baby jaundice is usually the following:  Physiological (normal) jaundice: occurring in most newborns, this mild jaundice is due to the immaturity of the baby's liver, which leads to a slow processing of bilirubin. It generally appears at 2 to 4 days of age and disappears by 1 to 2 weeks of age.

Please calm down and stop worrying.  Go get tested because all the worrying will do nothing but make you sick and not help a darn thing.

Please stop what if ing and go have a true Hepatitis C test.  Have an HCV viral load, meaning the HCV RNA Quanititative.  You have the antibodies but as Pooh said, about 25 % of those who are exposed to Hep C are able to clear it but will always have the antibodies.  And many things cause the liver to have swelling but you are right to be concerned since you have the antibodies AND swelling of your liver.  For all you know, you may have just been exposed and are in the acute phase thus the antibodies and the liver issues, however, you would usually be quite sick if you were in the acute phase.  so stop torturing yourself, and go get tested and find out for sure.  I was in shock when I found out and couldn't figure out for sure how I had gotten it.  THEN I remembered.  Anyway, if you have it you have gotten it at a very lucky time.  There are now non- side effect treatments in clinical trial.  I just finished one and am not undetectable and probably hopefully cured.  So, please stop doing this to yourself and go have the test and then please come back and tell us and we will all help with input so that you can make a good decision as to your next move.  Wishing, freaking out, crying - all these things won't make it go away or I wouldn't have had it.  Go get tested.

Its possible that it could be a false positve, or you just might have the antibodies only...

Thoughout ones lifetime theres many ways one can have blood to blood contact and it would be hard to remember every time... Wait till you get more testing done that confirms it.......... Best to you.

Wow, ty. What does it mean if I still have the anti bodies from Hepatitis C? Does it mean i'm still sick with it? Is it coming back? As far as I know everything you've listed I've never been in contact with, except for possible hospitals or dentists, or tattoos having contaminated equipment. If I had jaundice as a baby, could that be what it's from? Because I read somewhere online that, that is a symptom of Hep C

TY for your response. I still don't see how I could have gotten it. I haven't been in contact with any blood but my own. Never used a nasal drug. I do have a tattoo from about 8 years ago, the place was clean and I watched them open the needle from the sterile case, with gloves on and use fresh new ink newly open right in front of me and so on. I'm just freaked out about it, I don't want this and really don't see how I could get it. Even all my friends and family are baffled at it.
