Iron Studies, which ones

What Iron studies are necessary to insure that our iron levels are good for producing hgb during tx and procrit use? Are these expensive tests and do they take time to get results?
Thanks,
Dave

Well, my doc did what he called an "iron study" on me, and it included:

Iron
TIBC
UIBC
Transferrin Saturation (this is just the ratio of TIBC and UIBC expressed as a percentage I think)
Ferritin

Sorry to hear you're having so much trouble with this bro. We're rooting for ya!

Hi Trin-
I went to my gp and he knew what I needed. He ordered iron level, ferritin , TIBC and % Iron saturation. He also ordered a vitamin d level for me.

I should retract that Dave because you have hemolytic anemia and that is basically what a TIBC shows.  Sorry, don't really know which test they perform under the circumstances.

I would think a TIBC (Total Iron Binding Capacity) would show if there is too little iron in the blood.  Fairly simple test.
