Once again, Hector calms the fear. I'm not going to worry about it til I hear from Dr. I can't fret over everything. I'm sure its bone marrow problems. I know fatigue is really taking over. I'm headed back to bed, sans wig.
Billy, I'm gonna call eye Dr. first tho.. Thanks for the reminder. So many things to think about. I guess I got into the habit of work, sleep, eat and now have holiday break to focus.
Karen :)
karen...have you gotten your eyes checked out? a real good exam...maybe your not getting enough oxygen to the little blood vessels in the back of your eyes...be careful....billy
Platelet clumping shows falsely decreased platelet counts when using automated cell counting. The lab should be using "citrate-anticoagulated blood specimens" for platelet counting to avoid clumping. Or perform a manual Peripheral Blood Smear if they have the expertise.
Prothrombin time (PT) is a blood test that measures how long it takes blood to clot. A prothrombin time test can be used to check for bleeding problems. Normal clotting times are 11-13 seconds. Cirrhotics may be higher.
"Platelet Evaluation
The platelet count is one of several laboratory assays of importance in the functional evaluation of the hemostatic system. A decreased platelet count (thrombocytopenia) can result from a marrow production problem or a peripheral platelet destructive process. Bleeding complications or even death can result in the presence of a severely decreased platelet count. Elevated platelet counts (thrombocytosis) can result from a reactive or neoplastic process. EDTA-anticoagulated blood is preferred for platelet counts, but the specimen must be thoroughly mixed to prevent platelet clumping and falsely decreased platelet counts (spurious thrombocytopenia). However, rare individuals have EDTA-activated, nonpathogenic anti-platelet antibodies and require citrate-anticoagulated blood specimens for platelet counting. Other than platelet clumping, red and white blood cell fragments are most often responsible for interference with accurate platelet counts. Modern hematology analyzers calculate the mean platelet volume (MPV), based on a platelet distribution histogram. The MPV is increased in patients with peripheral platelet destructive processes, in whom young, large platelets are rapidly released from the bone marrow. The MPV is decreased in cases of thrombocytopenia due to marrow suppression."
