my daughter in law mixes melted butter with rum and then paints it on the cake after it is baked. My Dad who has been in AA for 43 years won't touch it although he does take a good whiff!!
PS: I still don't think a tiny bit would matter unless one is a recovering alcoholic. I think recovering alcoholics should probably avoid all alcohol. Why take the chance.
I agree that cooking eliminates the alcohol, but some baked goods, cakes, cookies, specialty items, holiday goods, are baked (or cooked) and then the alcohol is added after baking/cooking. I know. I used to make some of them around the holidays. I can think of a few ... rum cake, bourbon balls, a delicious California fruitcake (with tons of real nuts and real dried fruit, not the candied crap you get in the store) (everyone loved those fruit cakes). The fruitcakes were baked 6 weeks in advance, kept tightly wrapped in the refridgerator, and rum or some other alcohol was added daily and the fruitcakes were turned daily. Those fruitcakes were saturated with alcohol. Anyway, not to put a damper on things, but some baked goods with alcohol have the alcohol added after baking.
I've been trying to get the visual of eating Bung Hole Cake out of my mind since first reading the thread. LOL
Been waiting for someone to point out cooking eliminates the alcohol
and just leaves the flavor.
Thanks
Reva
MEN - UGH !!!!!!! I will never again have the rum cake without the visual supplied by you guys - thanks - lol
my hole therapy consists of Boudreaux's Butt Paste, baby wipes and cold water... lol in reverse order.
Yes, I do like tossed salad and bundt cake...
but can pass on the fruit bowl and bung hole rum cake...
I can truly say, I have never eaten nor had a desire to eat a Bunghole Cake. Are ya’ll sure you’re not referring to a Bundt Cake?

I remember having tossed salad & bung hole cake for dessert...too bad I'm on a diet now! (I didn't want to touch the hole therapy issue either).
Once you use this in cake or recipes and it get to a certain degree when it is cooking the alcohol is gone.
You will be ok
Don't know bout tossed salad but isn't there alcohol in a fruit bowl too???
Does any Salad Dressings have alcohol in them? I love Tossed Salad.

bung hole rum cake of which I did partake several times during tx. Is it bad that I licked the beaters? And the cake pan? Spoon? Pan? Oven?
I am a recovering alcoholic and there is a little Bistro down the street that makes the most incredible Rum Cake I have ever tasted. Of course it has rum in the cake but lots in this syrup dressing that covers it. Anyway I have tasted all kinds of stuff like that over the years and never got that tingly, whirring feeling in the back of my head like Whoa when I tasted their cake.
Like the others have said it very likely does not matter at all and you will be fine but I don't want to discount the whole idea that all desserts like that are totally harmless for everyone (i.e., people like me)♪
Ahhh, now it's beginning to all make sense. It must have been bung cake. :-))
This is too funny. Except for rexx73's worries. I know how it feels to get worried about this stuff. Glad you are ok. Good luck in tx!
