My husband has problems with toenail fungus and athlete's foot.  His doctor basically said with his liver condition it is best not to treat it.

You can get an order for Penlac from your DR. It is a topical that works well.

Here are a couple of articles that may shed some light on the subject:

Hepatitis C
Hepatitis C is a virus that attacks the liver cells. The virus will rapidly multiply within the liver, causing inflammation and damage. Hepatitis C affects the immune system, causing serious liver damage leading to scarring of the liver. The virus causes the immune system to break down, making the affected person more susceptible to other infectious diseases.

Causes: By Mayo Clinic staff

Nail fungal infections are typically caused by a fungus that belongs to a group of fungi called dermatophytes. But yeasts and molds also can be responsible for nail fungal infections. .....

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/nail-fungus/DS00084/DSECTION=causes

Risk factors: By Mayo Clinic staff  (Note the very last line of this blurb):

Aging is the most common risk factor for nail fungus .....

Nail fungus tends to affect men more often than it does women, particularly those with a family history of this infection.

Other factors that can increase your risk of developing nail fungus include:
Perspiring heavily
Working in a humid or moist environment
Having the skin condition psoriasis
Wearing socks and shoes that hinder ventilation and don't absorb perspiration
Walking barefoot in damp public places, such as swimming pools, gyms and shower rooms
Having athlete's foot (tinea pedis)
Having a minor skin or nail injury, a damaged nail, or another infection
**Having diabetes, circulation problems or a weakened immune system**

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/nail-fungus/DS00084/DSECTION=risk-factors

So it seems that since Hep C can weaken the immune system, Hep C could make us more susceptible to fungal infections.

Hep-C compromises my immune system. I developed a fungal infection on my toe nails about 5 years ago. I can't say for certain that my compromised immune system contributed to my toenail fungal infection, but it's possible. My doctor treated my fungal infection with pills that were easy on my liver. Unfortunately ..yes

Liver Disease and Nail Fungus

“Liver cirrhosis, hepatitis C virus (HCV) and hepatitis B (HBV) virus infections are known to be associated with different skin disorders. Nail changes are additional important criteria, which would help in identification of these systemic diseases.” Two groups of patients were studied, those with liver problems and those without. It was found that 68% of the patients who had cirrhosis of the liver, hepatitis C and hepatitis B, had nail abnormalities. “Conclusion Nail changes are observed with not only liver cirrhosis but also with HCV and HBV infection, and this will add additional clinical criteria for general practitioners and dermatologists to help them with diagnosis of these common systemic infections.”
