I have a good friend at 53 had it done and he was on deaths door 2 years ago. They only gave him 3 months and that was just a little over 2 years ago. He is now active and and doing well. he has a lot of latculose to take daily but it is worth the hassle. So from a friend looking in I feel it is worth having done. We are hoping for another 5 plus years. I ride harley's with him and I am glad to have him around.

I believe TIPS is a procedure that can reduce portal hypertension in some cases; however, I believe it’s also somewhat controversial. I read that while the operation might improve the quality of life for some, it doesn’t generally improve survival rates. I’m sorry to hear about your mother’s troubles; is she being seen by a competent hepatologist at this point? Has she been referred to a transplant center for evaluation?
