ammonia spike

Im wondering if anyone else has had experience with a dramatic ammonia spike. My fathers went from 20 while be treated with lactulose to 193 while in the hospital after we took another down turn. Its been a week and is barley able to talk or communicate. We are using high doses a Vitamin C to help flush the brain of the ammonia. The blood levels came back into normal range with in 36 hours but the cause is undetermined.

Thank you! :)  Yes, I have cut out all red meat, fried foods, processed food, try to eat whole foods.
Once in a great while I will have some fried fish though not often

Cut out eating all red meat, red meat helps to create ammonia in people with advanced cirrhosis.

I tried to answer this about 45 minutes ago.  I don't see the post.
Is your Dad still taking the lactulose?  that is the best thing to take when one has liver damage.  Was the hospital aware he was on lactulose?
One the liver is damaged enough to need lactulose it needs to be taken daily to get the level down.
Oh...I see where you said it went down.  Do you attribute that to the vitamin C? Does your Dad have HCV?
Sorry my comment did not come through the first time.

Hi is your Dad using lactulose?  Was the hospital aware that he was taking it?  The lactulose is something that needs to be continued in order to remove the ammonia.
If you Dad has a damaged liver this would be something he should take every day or his ammonia will go up.
I hope he is better soon.
