update Quantum

The virus is back as I expected it would be, having only treated for 2.5 weeks.  I'm looking forward to the roll-over around April, which will be open label riba/7977, response guided 12/24 weeks.  During my visit the doc showed me paperwork for another trial for those who fail the triple therapy. He's a believer in Pharmasset's 7977 and again assured me there won't be a problem with reisistance as there can be with the protese inhibitors.
I wish we'd all respond to whatever we take but for now, it is whatEVER it is.  I'm hopeful and the future looks brighter than the past.

In my experience, Chinese herbs (and acupuncture) have not been effective in killing the virus, though no one ever told me that it would. It was a matter of treating the symptoms, easing my discomfort and giving my liver as much support and nourishment as possible. At some point, it wasn't enough and I was fortunate to get into a study using drugs that were potentially toxic to my liver but that could possibly kill the virus. I opted for the gamble, as most of us do when we have limited choices. Chinese medicine has a lot to offer Western medicine and like anything, one does some thinking, some research and makes as informed a decision as one can. There is no call to berate people for looking into options. We are all doing what we can-not everyone needs to agree with the choices,a little respect goes a long way...

Chinese herbs that he had been taking for one year.  Is liver went from a stage 3 to a stage 1 pretty amazing."

NO way possible in this universe.  Please dont anybody fall for that.......in fact herbs can do MORE damage to your liver than good.

Even with SVR you can't really expect to have any sort of liver improvement like that (in fact many people do not get any regression at all) - from stage 3 to 1 in that short a time and STILL HAVE THE VIRUS just reeks of pure BS.

Why oh why do people believe everything that they hear just because they want to?  Tell that guy to show you his biopsy results (who has two biopsies in one year?) - otherwise do NOT buy it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Joy best of luck to you. It's great you can get on the roll over trial. Please keep us posted on your results. There are many of us on this forum who have failed and read all we can on the new meds. So again please keep us posted.

It seems very hopeful.  The PSI 7977 seems a very powerful and helpful drug.  But there are a lot of oral drugs which are not panning out and it is very sad to see this happen to people joining experimental trials.  I was  just informed about a Roche trial with 4 oral drugs in which 9 of 10 people followed post treatment, relapsed.  If the individual adds ifn out of rescue, that means she will be taking 5 drugs altogether.  I hope and pray that the great results with PSI 7977 so far means the end is in sight for discovering the cure and making such cocktails, with their inevitable side effects, unnecessary.

Good luck with the rollover.  Thank you for your willingness to be out there trying experimental medications to hopefully make things even better in the future.  Keep us posted on your outcome.

Sounds like you have a great option in riba/7977 for the rollover.  Response-guided is also nice, although I think I would find it difficult to have the faith to stop at 12 weeks.

"He's a believer in Pharmasset's 7977 and again assured me there won't be a problem with reisistance as there can be with the protese inhibitors."

That must mean that they are confident that the 7977/riba can overcome the mutations.  Wow!  That is HUGE if it is true.  Means if you treat for 12 weeks and fail you can come back and do the same again for 24 weeks.  That has not been known to be possible with any DAA so far.

Thanks for letting us all know how things are going. Response-guided with a chance to do just 12 weeks with RIBA and PSI-7977. Oooh yes please! I didn't like RIBA at all but if it was just 12 weeks with a _maybe_ having to do 24 that would be tolerable. It must be a pain having to stop and wait but that's a great treatment option.

By the way the gastroenterologist who oversaw the terminationof my previous failed IFN TX researched the Chinese herb treatment back around 2007. There is a standrad formula that has been around for years. She said it was so good that they thought it might be a cure at first. It wasn't cure but she thought it was helpful. She told me that with some people though, it raises liver enzyme levels. They don't know why. She recommended trying it while waiting for a better treatment. After living for a long time in Asia and seeing how they have integrated Western and Chinese medicine I am quite comfortable trying things Ike that. Initially I felt fantastic on it but then the effect diminished.

It's good to see these things being investigated, and consideration given to helping people who aren't able or willing to take interferon based treatments.

Whatever it takes....

Today my Dr's waiting room had several people that had the paperwork and were screening for the above study but twelve weeks.  Two of them had failed triple and one was a genotype 1 naive.,  There were two people on was a geno four stage four that was also screening for an Abbott study.I also spoke to someone who was on there last study visit that had failed trt twice and was in a study with some Chinese herbs that he had been taking for one year.  Is liver went from a stage 3 to a stage 1 pretty amazing.  I asked my Dr about that study for me when I am done and he said that it won't be open until everyone is done and that the person I met was one of the first.  Pretty amazing.

Yes, the future does look brighter. You said 12/24 weeks-do you know if the rollover is 12 or 24 weeks or does that depend on the individual's response?

Unlucky draw.  On the other hand, maybe a lucky one as a monotherapy arm might have also resulted in relapse or breakthrough but without a rescue.  7977 and Ribavirin seems a great rescue to have.  Best wishes as always Joy.
