herpes simplex is only hsv1 or hsv2.  the other herpes viruses are different.

what testing have you had done so far?

There are several types of Herpes...HSV1 (usually oral but can infect any body part), HSV2 (genital, but can also infect any body part), Herpes Zoster which is Chickenpox and if you've ever had the chickenpox you can be experiencing recurrent shingles, EBV which is Epstein Barr's virus also know as HSV4 and is usually associatted with mono but has other symptoms as well....and a whole list of other lesser known herpetic viruses.  You should be able to have your doctor to run bloodtest to find out specifically which strain of HSV you have and go from there, but that is not always the most accurate way to determine what course of treatment you may need as once you've been infected with any type of HSV it shows up in your bloodstream...it just means you've been exposed to the strain of virus.  A better way to find out exactly which strain you have is to have your doctor drain the fluid from a lesion on your skin and have it cultured...that way you KNOW exactly what you're dealing with.

If your herpetic outbreak 4 months ago was your first/initial outbreak...I have read that you can have recurrent outbreaks many times over the first year...having HSV does not mean that you have HIV but can increase the likelihood of you catching it...if you were to have HIV it would make your HSV outbreaks worse or possibly more frequent.  If you suspect you may have been in contact with someone with HIV...just ALWAYS use protection as a precaution...it can take HIV months and even years to show antibodies in your bloodstream.

I am currently freaking out in a similar situation.  I have always had HSV1 since a child (orally) but just a few months back had an outbreak vaginally where it couldn't be seen,  but my other symptoms were flu-like, achy, broken back, hot flashes throughout my body...I've only tested positive for HSV1 and I've had the pox, Zoster, so I know I'm having a systematic break-out of HSV1 or shingles but the doctors don't really know since my symptoms are asymptomatic or atypical....I too worry about HIV but have continued to test negatively for it.

My suggestion is to ask for 'specific' testing for your condition and to play safe.  I hope everything works out for you...I know all about being anxious.
