yes this is normal not to have cold sores for awhile and then get one.
the only accurate way to diagnose hsv2 orally is a lesion culture of active symptoms which it's way too late for that. If you have a blood test that comes back as hsv2+, it doesn't mean that this cold sore you recently had had to be due to hsv2.
perhaps more info as to why you think you have contracted hsv2 orally recently would help us help you more?

I have had hsv 1 as long as I can remember. Never resurfaced until recently as my life has changed. Our physiology can change as we get older as can the stress. Yes, you can have different frequency of outbreaks later in life. Getting tested at 2.5 months is pretty darn accurate, 90-something %. Call and find out which IGG test is offered and check their site for testing timelines. You are worried about a new HSV 2 infection only cuz you had a cold sore and you know you have type 1? More likely a recurrent type 1 cold sore. Get checked anyway as it should be part of your routine anyway if you are sexually active.
Thanks for the input. It has been 2.5 months since the outbreak. Should I wait a few more weeks before the IGG test, or would it be accurate at this point?
I have not had an HSV-1 outbreak in almost 10 years, since I was 18. Is it normal for HSV-1 to lay dormant that long and then re-surface again?
Thanks
An IGG test will distinguish between 1 and 2 accurately at around 3 months post exposure. Chances of getting HSV 2 orally is low, getting it while having an established HSV 1 infection is even lower. Oral HSV 2 infections also have fewer outbreaks, as it is not the preferred area. Therefore, I would not be too worried.
