Several thoughts: again, find out how he was diagnosed with HSV, whether it was a blood test or a swab, or a visual diagnosis (the last is not reliable). The HSV Type (not strain) matters. If he has his test results, ask to see them to see whether it definitively indicates it's Type 2, rather than Type 1.
If he has genital HSV, you can contract it by giving him oral sex. The incidence of oral HSV-2 is low, but it does exist. We can be contagious at any time, even without symptoms - a phenomenon called "asymptomatic shedding."
The antivirals, including Valtrex, take 5-7 days to reach protective levels, and even then, they only reduce the transmission risk about 50% when taken every day. However, this is a good thing for him to do, to reduce the risk to you. Adding a condom during every sexual encounter adds another layer of protection. Of course you should abstain from sex during symptoms.
Finally, you should get tested yourself - in fact you should both get tested, together, for everything, just to know what you each bring to the relationship. Hugs to you!
Thank you so much for replying! Is she using a condom or can I go without one as long as he doesn't ejaculate in my mouth? I just can't imagine it would b very good with condom on but what do I kno. I do think he is talking valtrex everyday
I'm a married male with HSV2. My wife has performed oral sex on me for years and has never caught HSV2. Two rules. Make sure there is no visible outbreak or redness. Second, stay away from his semen because if he is shedding , basically within his mucus membrane inside his penis shaft, then his semen could potentially carry the HSV2. If you want to be extra safe then have him take Valtrex a hours before any sexual activity to reduce any chance of shedding. Hope this helps.
I am also confused I get about type 1 and 2. I thought 2 was genital and 1 oral. So if it has nothing to do with location, I'm not sure which he has, just that it is genital
He said he hadn't been feeling well the last few months and he and his ex had split 8 months ago. They have two children together and has been under a lot of stress. So he went to the doc bc he had zero sex drive and was wondering if something was wrong with his testosterone. He had an outbreak I guess and thought it was a rash from trimming. So im not sure if he did a blood test. The day he found out he told me, off course scared of what I would say. I'm just trying to research and get all the info I can
Hsv 1 and two are differant strains and has nothing to do with location. Hsv does shed so it is possible to get it even when no outbreak is happening. You can acquire hsv2 orally but it's far more rare than oral hsv1.
Protected sex is effective at reducing the chances of contracting hsv but it's not 100% because the virus can shed anywhere in the boxer shorts region of the body.
How was he diagnosed? Was it from a blood test or was he having an outbreak?
