Herpes and hepatis B drug interactions

I have been taking medication for Hepatis B since 5 months ago, 0.5 mg Baraclude. On Sunday, I noticed that I had painful red bumps in the genital area. Some of the bumps were filled with water and by Monday they had bursted. It was so painful and itching. I went to see a specialist (because of the holiday season the regular doctor was not there) so I saw a Nurse Practitioner. She thought that it may not have been from shaving, but it would be from Herpes. She took bloodwork and with give the test result to me on Monday (after New Years). Meanwhile she prescribed a cream and Valtrex to be used for 10 days (BID).

My question is that since both of them are antivirals, should I use Baraclude and Valtrex together for these 10 days?  Under warning "drug interactions" it says not to take Valtrex while taking Baraclude. Please help me with this, not sure what to do. The Nurse Practitioner seemed not to know much about Baraclude (had to look it up).

did they tell you the actual results of your blood testing? I'd call the clinic monday and ask them to read your results to you for you to write down to post here. All I need to see are the actual numeric results - e.g. hsv1 igg 4.3 and hsv2 igg .45 or whatever they are.

do you have a regular partner? if so, have they been tested for herpes yet?

hsv1 genitally isn't always reflected in blood testing. hsv2 usually is if you've been infected for at least a few months.

I'd schedule an appointment with  your gyn for this month to follow up on all of this too. get tested for vaginal infections while there as well as you can discuss follow up testing.

So after I asked a couple of other pharmacists ,they said its ok to use them both for the 10 days. Since I started Valtrex I am much better. Got a call from the doctor's office and the tests were not clear weather it was herpes or not, the culture it was not "saved" properly to get tested (so I got nothing from that). I was told to later to get checked again through bloodwork.
Thank you Grace for your help. In your experience where is the best place to go and get those tests done. I was unlucky this time that it was holiday season and my OBGYN was not there and ended up going to a dermatologists office. When is the best to go and get these tests done as well to find out.
I thought about the vaginal infection, I had that same thought. I had used several times soap to wash down there, could that have been a reaction to this. What your opinion? Could herpes stay for a long time in the body and not show up in the bloodwork?

unfortunately zovirax ointment isn't very effective at all on genital herpes lesions :(  we don't even recommend its use overall.    you should be applying it at least 4x/day though.

you can also try soaking in the bathtub with epsom salts in the water or even pick up a sitz bath set up and soak your bum in that with epsom salts thrown in several times a day.

did they also test you vaginally for bacterial infections?

I went today in to do a swab test since a few of the watery things showed up this morning. At least, now I will know for sure what it is. Never had this in my life as far as I know.

Thank you both for the replies. I have called the pharmacy and she told me that taking them both at the same time might be risky for my kidneys. Valtrex would increase the level of Baraclude in my blood and that maybe damaging the kidneys. The pharmacist told me to use theointment Zovirax 5%, it's know that maybe the ointment only does wonders. For now I am using only the oinment and let's see how it works applying BID.
I forgot to ask though if I may apply the ointment more than twice a day, to get better results.

give the pharmacy a call and ask if they have other recommendations for treatment for you. I'm not at all familiar with baraclude to give you any advice at all on this.

This question would be best asked to your pharmacist.  However, I would also wait for Grace to respond to this question.  Given her experince she would be the best to answer her but in the interim your pharmacist can help you out as well.
