It is possible that your wife had it for years without knowing it. HSV can stay dormant for years and come out later in life for a variety of reasons. It could also be a new infection from a more recent sexual encounter. There is even the much less likely scenario that you carry HSV2 and don't have antibodies showing up in the blood test--that is possible, if less likely.
Herpes simplex virus type II primarily effects the genital area and is transmitted by sexual contact. However, cross-infection may result from orogenital sex. While generally not dangerous, it is a nuisance, can be painful and may be emotionally traumatic. While there is no cure, the frequency and severity of attacks can be reduced. Valtrex is a well known and effective medication to treat and reduce symptoms as well as outbreaks subscribed by a Primary Doctor.
Incidence; Causes and Development
Genital herpes is one of the leading sexually-contracted diseases. Spreading every day, genital herpes is considered an epidemic in the making. Due to the mode of transmission, genital herpes are rarely seen in children. However by early teens, when sexual contact begins, genital infections rise dramatically, continuing for the next twenty years.
Genital herpes requires intimate body contact, either through intercourse or oral sex. As a result of oral sex, Herpes I can be found in the genital area and/or Herpes II can be found on the mouth. Both HSV-1 and HSV-2 can cause genital herpes. Roughly speaking, HSV-2 causes 60% and HSV-1 causes 40% of all cases.
General causes of recurrent genital infection include common stressful conditions such as menstruation, emotional upset, pregnancy, and local trauma to the genitalia. It is common to have an outbreak a week after having intimate sex.
Signs and Symptoms
A first infection with genital herpes generally occurs three to seven days after sexual exposure. Often people do not notice this infection for the first time, while others have their worst outbreak. Symptoms vary from a slight fever to a group of blisters which crust over and disappear.
Genital Herpes: symptoms include itching, burning in the genital area and discomfort urinating, and a watery vaginal or urethral discharge. A weeping vesicular eruption in the vagina or on the penis is an early sign.
Typical symptoms
For women, blisters involve the external genitalia (the labia, perirectal skin, foreskin of the clitoris), in addition to the vagina and cervix. It is common to have watery discharge and pain during urination.
For men, groups of blisters appear on the head, foreskin, or shaft of the penis including surrounding areas of the genitalia. Generally, herpes can show up anywhere in the pelvic area both front and back.
It is common among men and women to experience low-grade fever, headache, generalized muscle aching, and tender, swollen lymph nodes in the groin. The first visible outbreak can last anywhere from 3 to 6 weeks.
Well after my blood test results it turns out that it was negative. now the big questions is how did my wife of 10 years get herpes? :(
lesion cultures actually have higher false negatives than blood tests do.
once you have your blood tests, feel free to post results here for more help with them too - ie hsv1 igg 5.4 and hsv2 igg .45 or whatever they are.
Yes, i understand you don't need an active breakout for a blood test. What i was saying is from my understanding blood tests can give false negatives where cultures from a lesion is going to be more accurate vs. the blood test.
blood testing for herpes looks for igg antibodies to having been infected with herpes. You do not need to have an active lesion present for the blood testing.
Thank you gracefromHHP. We will both be getting the blood testing. However from what i have read without an active outbreak/culture Blood test can give false negatives...Care to comment?
at this point, you both should seek out type specific herpes igg blood tests to see who has what. You are going to have to know that information in order to determine what precautions to take in the future so well worth you both getting now.
not all providers order typing of herpes cultures unfortunately. Some don't realize how important it is. Her provider can call the lab to add on a typing since odds are they have the culture still. faster answers but both of you getting the blood testing is also going to give you answers too.
I really appreciate your comment back. So what you are saying is a breakout typically indicates recent exposure, to anothers active sores? (I have never had a breakout or diagnosed) yet on her butt cheek and just the top inside of the crack is an odd spot to have a breakout? She is having a blood test to determine the type of Herpes HSV1 or HSV2. They recently did a culture of the sore to determine it is Herpes, which i thought they could tell they type that way as well.
Hi, the thing about herpes sores is that new infections can appear on both sides but old established infections are side specific. So from what your describing, it could be a recent exposure (but the area is very suspicous to be recent as first time outbreaks occur at point of contact like the genital area) or one of the cheek sores are not herpes.
Was the test for hsv herpes or shingles. you need to find out what kind of herpes just to be clear
