I thought...

Ok... I thought that once you start an outbreak, and go thru it and the lessions are almost gone that you're not supposed to get new sores in a different area... I started this outbreak last weekend, I got diagnosed with Herpes (by my Gyn.) on tuesday and I did the 3 day Valtrex. now all those sores I have are almost gone and I find this NEW sore, up just above my pubic hair area (had no idea you could get them there either)
I am confused... why isn't themedicine working? should I go get more?
Herpes is new to me and I'm starting to get very overwhelmed and I am getting NO support. Does anyone know of an online support group?

20 years ago when I first started on suppressive therapy - I paid $135/month with insurance for my acyclovir!!! Now I get a 3 month supply for $7.  Thank goodness they have cheap generics!!!!  Back in the day though I would've taken out a 2nd mortgage if need be to get it though - I was having ob's very frequently and needed the break from them!

It certainly won't hurt to take another 3 days worth of valtrex but then again it might not help either. You got it at a reasonable price so no harm in taking a round of medication again. If things aren't more cleared up by monday - return to your doc and get tested again for yeast and bacterial infections. Being down with other germs is probably the culprit here but you never know just how much your body hates you this week :(

Yeah... for what I've been reading it is acting like a primary... but I have had some sores before and so that is what led my Dr. to believe that this wasn't the 1st outbreak.
However, other outbbreaks have never been this bad! Maybe the fact that I'm down with the Flu isn't helping my immune system?
Fortunatelly I only had to pay $25 for my prescription (one more reason to never leave my job... LOL) so that's no issue... I was wondering if it was going to help at all.
Thanks... hope to catch you in the chat room some time!

What does the prescription say?  Since this is acting like a primary for you, you might want to take 1gm 2x/day for a week to 10 days.  Also, since you are still getting new blisters, taking the meds will at least help prevent new ones.

If money is an issue, then acyclovir works just as well, and its WAY cheaper.

And sometimes people are in the chat room, others not. But keep trying.  A lot of us check it a lot.

Ok... I got my prescription filled today. Holly Mother Nature! how do people without insurance afford this??? Especially how do they afford suppressive treatment? I couldn't believe it.

Now, back to my subject... I have the medicine... Last week I did the 3 day dose of Valtrex 500mg x2/day. I finished that on Fri. The next day I notice this new HUGE blister (the one I mentioned up here before) and by later that day I started feeling as if another was developing. That last one has yet to flare up, and the big ugly one above the pubic hair hasn't opened into a sore yet.
I called my Dr and ask him to call in the drug. But I forgot to ask him how should I go about taking it now again or if its even worth it. Will it help me? or am I just wasting my time since the blister is already there?
If I take it for the 3 days and the blister is still looking the same should I continue until it gets better?
Thanks for your help!
PS Grace, I'm aware I should have kept all my posts in one thread... sorry I didn't realize it until it was too late.

http://www.myramp.net/x7/  is the link to the chat room - not sure that will make it past the medhelp mods or not ;)  There's a link to it on the main page of the herpes homepage too.

Actually I am on another forum here and saw this one....I had an outbreak about 15 years ago...no blood test but the doc said that it was herpes...I am a nurse and thought so too...for about 2 years, I had outbreaks every 3-4 months...then they stopped...and I have never had one again....just thought this could be a positive note for some but I do realize that is not the norm

Well if things are still getting worse by monday - don't hesitate to go see your gyn to get tested for yeast and bacterial infections and such too.  They can cause herpes to go a little wilder than usual as well as mimick herpes recurrences.

They are nice folks in the chat room. Especially auntiejess, sparky, c16679 and windy if any of them are there. I hardly ever make it in there - I don't keep the same hours most folks do :(

Glad your doc gave you the gsk packet when you were diagnosed!!!  I think it's a very helpful packet myself!

Thanks guys... you're all very helpful.
I have yet to consider the idea of doing suppressive therapy. I think I need to get an idea of how often and how badly will it affect me before I make a desicion.
Grace, I did read all the info on that website (twice) and it is very good. The video is the same that my Gyn gave me with my sample of pills.
The reason he only gave me 3 pills is because I told him I have had this 'blisters' before... I never knew what they were though... but therefore this isn't my 1st outbreak.
I didn't realize there was a 'herpes chat room'... I'm going to look for that now... I think that will help me a bit.

3 days of valtrex is for recurrences. if this was your first noticed herpes ob then it should've been a full 7-10 days of 1gm 2x/day of the medication.  This is probably still your ob running its course. Give your doc a call today and ask them to phone you in more medication.

You can get lesions anywhere in your entire 'boxer short' area as we call it.

Check out the herpes homepage if you are looking for a good online support group outside of this one.  The chat room there is also usually hopping in the evenings after about 9pm est.

Did you get a chance to read the herpes handbook and watch the video at www.westoverheights.com?

Because herpes are the absolute DEVIL!!! I have simplex 1 (the lips kind). I take 500mg Valtrex once a day as a suppresive therapy, and 4000mg a day for an actual sore.

First of all, I know how incredibly stressful and overwhelming this virus can be. When I was in grade school, before Valtrex and Acyclovir were around I probably had 1+ cold sore on my lips 3/4s of the time. HELL. People don't understand how emtionally draining having it can be. It just sucks. So believe me I know how you feel, and I understand.

Second...there is hope. If you don't want to ever get a sore, get yourelf onto a suppressive therapy. You take one pill a day and you just don't get them. I went from the frequency I mentioned above to getting maybe 1 or 2 outbreaks a year. It is not too expensive if you have insurance. And it can really take it off your mind. Plus it eliminates a lot of the risk of spreading the virus.

Third, as for your current situation. In my experience, Valtrex helps, but it is not a gaurentee. If they want to show up they will. You can get a new sore at any time. During an outbreak, whenever. The thing about Valtrex is that it is incredibly helpful before an outbreak. If you take it as soon as you feel like you are getting an outbreak it can stop them from happening or atleast lessen the severity. At the same time, sometimes you just get an awful outbreak regardless of what you are taking. It is really hit or miss. But Valtrex does help.

Get yourself a suppressive therapy script with extra pills for flare ups. I get 100 500mg pills per month. 1 per day, with 10 extra in case of a flare up. It is the best way to go, and I have 24 years of herpes experience under my belt.

Feel free to private message me if you are stressing or have any questions. I have a ton of home remedies, etc. Good luck and hang in there. I know its stressful, but you will get a handle on it.
