Bartholin's Cyst or Herpes?

On 7/17 I engaged in sexual intercourse with a man. We used protection. However, at one point, he did lick his fingers and insert them into my vagina. On 7/19, I noticed a small pea-sized bump near the bottom of my vulva on the right hand side. It progressively became more painful until I saw a Nurse Practitioner on 7/24 who told me that my symptoms resembled that of a Bartholin's Cyst, but when she looked, she wasn't completely convinced and gave me a referral to see an OB/GYN (I will be seeing 8/3). She did however swab a small area inside my vagina as she said it looked like herpes, but without a lot of the characteristics. Has anyone experienced this before? I'm a bit anxious to wait a full week. I do have photographs, but I'm not sure how (or if) I can post them. Thank you for your time and help.

I received my results yesterday and discovered that I had contracted Herpes Simplex 1 (Oral). The lesions had not yet reached the surface and were causing swelling exactly in the place of a Bartholin's Cyst (which is what caused the confusion). Since then, more distinguishable lesions have developed. After speaking with my doctor, she said that it was possible that my partner licking his fingers and then inserting them into my vagina is what caused my initial outbreak, though it doesn't happen often.

Contracting hsv from him licking his fingers would be very unrealistic and condoms do offer excellent protection. Condoms actually protect the female better than the male. I am glad they did a swab test. Herpes lesions usually progress quickly to a water type blister.
We don't post pics on the sight unfortunately. If the bump seems under the skin that's another good sign it isn't hsv as hsv lesions are superficial.
