New Boyfriend has herpes - says I can't be infected outside of outbreaks

New Boyfriend has herpes and says I can't be infected outside of outbreaks. He was married twice and had numerous girlfriends (he has had Herpes for at least 25 years). He said he has never used protection (condoms) other than abstaining from sex when he has one of his rare outbreaks and none of his partners ever tested positive for it. I am terrified and don't know what to do! I need advice!

Hsv2 genital shedds 15-30% of the time meaning the virus is on the surface 15-30% of the time with no sore appearing so its quite often. Most often outbreaks are in the same spot give or take an inch so avoiding this area would be advised. The best way to have a relationship with him for your protection is using condoms for all sex activities, him taking anivirals for supression, avoiding sex during outbreaks  and avoid the spot.
Always remember he can be shedding anywhere in the boxer short area at any given time.

He has 2 and doesn't take any meds. He rarely has outbreaks. But just had two in two months (stress).

I meant the boyfriend is full of ____ for saying he can't transmit.  Didn't mean to imply that YOU are.

Just wanted to clear that up.

Of course they transmit the virus at times when they appear to not have symptoms because when they have symptoms they are more cautious.

Just to piggy-back from Life360's comment:

If he has HSV1, he's actually not that far off from being right.

If he has HSV2, he's full of s#it.  Most people transmit the virus at times when they appear to not have symptoms.

Hi, find out the type he has and if they know where he has it. This would be confirmed from a swab of a sore. If he does have it, then you would be at risk contracting it either oral or genital even without an outbreak as shedding does occur meaning the virus is on the surface without a sore present. The type is important either hsv1 or hsv2 as they shed at different rates and hsv2 genital shedds more and quite often. It shedds 15-30% of the time meaning its on the surface that often, But as hopeful suggests if hes on meds it would reduce it signifcently.
