New Herpes Couple

My girlfriend and I are in our mid 40's.  I have had a vasectomy.  One week after becoming sexually active, she found out she had HSV2 antibodies.  I was tested, but negative.  We started using condoms and trying to be safe, but I developed a typical Herpes lesion adjacent to my penile meatus last week.  I started acyclovir immediately; she has been on suppressive acyclovir therapy.  Now that we are both infected with the same virus, do we need to take further precautions?  Also what are the pros and cons of us both being on suppressive therapy?  Valtrex or Acyclovir?  Thx.

it's too bad you started the acyclovir instead of going to be seen and get a lesion culture done. At this point you won't know if you really contracted her hsv2 or not until possibly a few months from now.

At this point, I recommend still assuming she's hsv2+ and you are negative. Should you get a return of genital symptoms, be seen immediately and get a lesion culture done to confirm your status. Otherwise you'll need to get a hsv2 igg blood test in 3 months to see what your status is.

My IgG turned positive this week.  Still have the same questions.  If we stop using condoms are we at any further risk? Should we both be on suppressive therapy?  I had one very mild outbreak, she has had no outbreaks that she is aware of.  Should I be asking these questions on the docs' forum? Thx

what was your hsv2 igg?

no you don't need to be on suppressive therapy unless you both want to be ( or either of you want to be ).

no you don't have to use condoms if you are confident this is hsv2 too.

honestly no reason to pay $15 for the experts when I give you the same answers I assure you.  The 4 of us pretty much all are in sync and give the same info.

My physician just said it was abnormal, then clarified to say it was positive.  It was a specific Igg HSV2 test, but he didn't give me numbers.  I'm a medical professional and recognized the lesion for what it was and only needed the test for confirmation. Thx for your input.  Since we both have antibodies, I assume that there is no risk of us developing oral or anal infection on top of the genital, right?

you already have the virus in the anal area too. it infects the anogenital area when you are infected. shedding occurs from all areas. quite a few studies out on this now if you need a cure for insomnia and want to surf pubmed.

oral infection isn't likely to occur. just don't perform oral on active lesions or if your partner feels like an ob might be starting ( and vice versa ).
