Redness on both sides of my scrotum?

I have a red rash on the left side of my scrotum right below the shaft of my penis and a smaller area on the right side - the left side is very itchy and after itching it I find that it has become painful. I don't see any lesions or bumps besides hair follicles although I have noticed the skin flaking off a little bit after I have scratched.

I am sexually active but have not had sex since December '11. I recently had a hydrocele that caused my scrotum to swell up to the size of a lime and I had a hydrocelectomy to remedy that issue - I wore a cup-like jock supporter for about 2 weeks while the swelling abated and I was wondering if maybe that had irritated the skin on my scrotum. I wanted to see if this could still be herpes. IT is very red and it hurts and itches when I touch it.

It also seems to fluctuate in how red/how much of an area is affected depending on how often i touch it - the more I touch, the more inflamed and large the area gets.

don't under estimate how a fungal infection in the groin area can feel!  far more likely to be that than herpes. sweating under the device you were using is a big trigger for fungal infections.

It seems to get more red and irritated the more I touch it or handle the area. Are the signs I've presented common with genital herpes? I find it strange that the redness is present on both sides of the scrotum. There are no noticeable lesions or pimples that I can see - the area is becoming more irritated the more I touch it, though, and is very itchy even now when I don't interfere with it.

cetaphil won't help if this is a fungal rash. you'd need an antifungal cream to treat it.

I haven't been to my GP yet - I first noticed the redness after my hydrocelectomy and I am thinking maybe it is a result of wearing tight support and not showering the area for over a week.

I got some over the counter cetaphil anti-itch cream and that seemed to help a little bit - the area is still red, however, and painful/itchy the more it's touched.

typically this is a symptom of a fungal infection, not genital herpes.

have you been seen yet and had this looked at?
