Stressed Out

I recently went to the doctor to get a full std test run just to make sure and got some results that shocked me. They did an igm test and the results came back at a 1.16 and it says that 1.10 is positive. Does this mean that I do have hsv type 2. my doctor was very short with me and I need answers. he said that with time the igm will fall and the igg will rise. i am .09 over the stage they say is equivocal whatever that means. Please someone that knows how to speak human to me help out. I am also going to another lab next week to get the tests run again hoping they sent the wrong results or something. They didnt even run all the tests they were supposed to. And to boot i dont even remember if the cleaned the area before drawing the blood. I know I have type 1 because I have had chicken pox. Please someone help me.

chicken pox is a completely different herpes virus.  You will not test + for hsv1 on the blood tests due to a history of chicken pox.

Hi,maybe you can clear something up for me... You said you know you have type-1 cause you have had chicken pox.  If you have had chicken pox, would that give you immunity from getting type-1 in the future? I received oral sex and have been having crazy symptoms and if what you said is true, maybe I can eliminate that I have contracted hsv-1 thru this oral sex episode...  I'v had chicken pox as a 15 year old... Thanks...

Your gf should get herself a type specific herpes igg blood test to see what her own status is. if she's negative for herpes too then you know you didn't get it from her recently.  Just be open and honest with her - "sweetie, I had to go to the doctor's this week for this odd rash in my genital area and they suggested herpes testing for both me and you.  so far my tests are negative but you'll need tested too so that I'll know if I need more testing or not."

the thing that scares me the most is i had like a rash but my doctor just looked at it and said that it was an ingrown hair because i shave that area and was just going to send me on my way. I have been with the same girl since July and have never seen anything on her parts but now i have tests saying I might have it. I dont know if I can wait 3 or 4 months to go back it is driving me crazy. Also it says that symptoms can appear in just a couple weeks and the doctor said that with the way my levels were that it was likely that i was exposed to hsv2 recently and I dont know how to ask her if she has ever been tested. And if it was a (recent) contact that I had how do I tell her that she might be the one that I got it from.

Your igg is negative.

the igm should've never been drawn on you in the first place. if you check out the herpes health page here on medhelp ( everything you wanted to know about herpes but were afraid to ask  ) you'll find the link to an excellent past post by Dr handsfield on why the igm should never be drawn on you. Your provider err'ed in drawing it on you and you can't be diagnosed as having herpes from it.

if it's been at least 3 months since the last time you had sex then no reason for additional testing. if it hasn't been that long, wait until the 3 or 4 month mark and repeat your igg test then.
