Nerve damage from herniated disc or herpes prodrome?

Last year I had severe lower back pain and tingling on the left side of my groin for a week. Occasionally it would move to the top of my groin, with "shocks" on the right side. No sores/ bumps. I was tested for stds, by urine and genital culture, which were negative. A ct scan showed a herniated disc.
This week all symptoms returned. My question is
1. Could this pain be from herpes that was misdiagnosed and unrelated to my disc?
2. Would a genital culture have shown herpes?

Did you have a genital sore that they cultured? You should get a type specific IgG blood test to rule in/rule out herpes as a cause.

This could for sure be your disc, but it could be your disc and you could also have herpes. Only a test will tell you for sure.
