Where on earth?

I am a 65 year old professional heterosexual (although I maybe have sex every year or so with the same partner when he comes to town) who has NEVER had anal sex, ever. I had terrible pain in my anus and I thought it was hemroids. After a week of not getting much relief with those suppositories, I finally went to my GP and was told I had herpes in my anus. I am now on that Valtrex for one 245 hour period. It was getting better anyway. So, my question is: where in the world did I get this and how?????
Thanks

What test did they do?

Herpes can affect the nerves in the anal area.  Keep doing your kegel exercises everytime you think about it to keep strengthening the muscles in that area.

Did they really only give you a 1 day dose of valtrex?

I guess I should have said I was a female. I know the doctor did a test but the results are not back. Now, I have to put an pain/itching preventative cream on my anus as it hurts so much and I seem to have lost the ability to hold my feces very well. Every time I pass a little gas, I have to change my underwear. Every time I wipe myself I make it hurt more. I am going on a trip to Alaska and can't even imagine taking care of this in the wilds......

so being a heterosexual is a profession? he he he ( couldn't resist ! )

The thing about genital herpes is - if you contract it - you can expect to have symptoms anywhere below the waist but usually they are in the boxer short area as we call them or the area covered by a regular pair of boxer shorts.  The virus infects the skin and then travels up thru the nerves and sets up housekeeping in the sacral nerve ganglia and then can reactivate and travel anywhere along the entire sacral nerve group to cause obvious lesions on the surface of the skin.  This includes the anal area too. You don't ever have to have anal sex to get lesions there.

How did your provider test you for herpes? Do you know if it' s hsv1 or hsv2 yet?
