William Halford Herpes Research

Grace, I was reading through some older posts and I have seen that you stated Dr. Halford was doing some interesting research on a vaccine but it was a risky but it was using a live virus. I was wondering if you have any updates on his research? It was mentioned in a post late in 2011. I have tried to find some information online without sucess. Any ideas on the outcome of this?

Thanks in advance.

Some one brought this page to my attention and your comment / question regarding why I have stopped giving updates.

First, regarding what is happening in the lab, the HSV-2 vaccine research is ongoing in my lab and (1)continues to be highly promising and (2) continues to provide improved insight into why past HSV-2 vaccines have not worked so well. I am in the process of trying to publish new scientific manuscripts that address this point.

Second, regarding clinical trials of my live-attenuated HSV-2 vaccine, I think that my HSV-2 vaccine would (1) prevent genital herpes in people who have never been exposed and (2) could work as a therapeutic vaccine to reduce the frequency and duration of genital herpes outbreaks in those who already have HSV-2. Therefore, I think a clinical trial of this HSV-2 vaccine candidate is badly needed, and would greatly improve clinical outcomes (i.e., start reducing the spread and burden of HSV-2 disease worldwide). That said, the vast majority of people in HSV-2 vaccine research are living in the past and clinging to the hope that a slight modification of a Herpevac-type vaccine is the answer. I wish them all well, but I am less hopeful that this approach will work, and I think that we will continue to not have an effective HSV-2 vaccine for so long as the “leaders” in my field continue to take the “my way or the highway approach” to HSV-2 vaccine development. In other words, we have tested 3 HSV-2 subunit vaccines in human clinical trials in the past 20 years, but have not seriously considered a single HSV-2 viral vaccine in a similar type of human clinical trial. In my estimation, this discrepancy explains why we still don’t have an effective HSV-2 vaccine.

Third, why don’t I keep up with blogs on the internet. Long story short…..I have a job and other responsibilities like (1) teaching Microbiology and Immunology to 75 medical students every fall, (2) asking the NIH for more research funding ($$$) which is essential to move the HSV-2 vaccine research forward, (3) helping the people in my lab stay on track with the research, (4) writing all those boring papers of mine you can find in Pubmed which is the “blog” that really accounts, and (5) occasionally talking to my wife and kids in between activities 1 – 4. Bottom line: if you want an update on my research, just e-mail me (***@****) and I will try to do my best to give you a response. However, I am not much of a Facebooker or a blogger.

last I knew he still hadn't gotten funding for his research to start human trials. I think he actually updates on the herpes homepage if you want to look there.
