your hsv2 is the issue in this relationship. hsv2 protects against hsv1 but not vice versa. your bf can still contract hsv2 from you so discuss together what precautions you want to take together other than just avoiding sex anytime either of you has symptoms in the genital area.

Thanks Grace,
We are taking the necessary precautions for the HSV 2, condoms and I'm on daily Valtrex. We were just wondering about transmission of the HSV 1 to my mouth, if we didn't use condoms for oral sex.
were you ever blood tested to know your full hsv1 status at any point anyways?
No, just had the lesion culture done, that's how it's done here in Canada. The blood test is only done in certain parts of the country and I'll have to look at where I could get it done.
you can get it done anywhere in canada. the trick is getting your provider to order the type specific test for you. it's my understanding you probably have to pay for it out of pocket. most adults have hsv1 so it's worthwhile testing for it.
even if yo uare hsv1 negative, odds are you won't contract your partners hsv1 infection anyways.
