when you were infected with hsv1 orally, the virus worked its way to the trigeminal nerve ganglia and set up housekeeping so to speak. Periodically it reactivates and travels down those nerves again. Sometimes you get obvious cold sores to know it's active and other times your immune system keeps it in check enough that you only have shedding of the virus thru the mucous membrane area of the mouth and not an obvious blister. When the virus is active on the skin's surface, you can potentially transmit it to a partner either thru romantic type kisses or performing oral sex on them. Knowing your partner's hsv1 status is helpful in knowing if this is an issue in a relationship or not.

but herpes only travels in the skin right, so does if there are no active sores present, how can it travel to the other person?
You can but it's not as likely when active sores are not present it's a bit of a lottery really no real guarantees where Herpes transmission is concerned I'm afraid ....
