HSV Intial infection?

Hi

I have HSV1 definitely, no signs of hsv 2 and blood shows no sign of hsv2 either.  I get lesions on my mouth and sometimes tiny itching or cuts on my genitals, but generally only after sex and not THAT often (maybe twice a year if I'm having frequent sex without a condom)

My concern is potentially passing this onto my current and hopefully permanent partner, which I fear I may have already done.  I have told her about this, and she just says 'lets cross that bridge when we get to it', but it  is a real concern of mine.  I always abstain from sex when I feel I might be getting anything on my mouth and definately if I see any signs on my penis of any read or itchiness.

On the evening of Friday the 8th, my girlfriend was complaining of a lower sore back.  She just had a very light massage, so we didn't think too much of it.

Morning of Saturday the 9th she was feeling a little 'off' and had a very sore back.  We had a spa at around 4pm and she seemed ok, but shortly after she was on the couch shivering with the chills and looked white as a ghost.  She was complaining of feeling week, chills and a sore lower right back.  Also frequent urination.  I later found out that she had a headache from the Friday night also, which still persisted until tonight (Tuesday the 12th).

By 8pm on the Saturday we were off to the country hospital, as we were staying out in the country and had no access to a DR.  They took a urine sample; came back 20 minutes later and said she had a urinary tract infection (UTI) that had spread to the kidneys (how they told this from a short urine sample i'm not sure).  They said there's no point sending the urine to find out what the exact bacteria was because the cephalexin works in %90 of the cases.  They gave her anti-biotics and sent her on her way and said she would feel better tomorrow.  This was at 9pm on Saturday night. Note, she was not experiencing any pain when urinating even though a diagnosis of a UTI.

Morning of Sunday the 10th she woke up not feeling really any better.  By mid day the back pain had started to subside but she was still running a temperature, feeling weak and groggy and still had a headache.  If i tapped on her back (to the far right just above her hip) she said it was a little tender.

Night of Sunday the 10th, she said her back pain had pretty much gone but would get the odd 'shooting pain' from the back.  She still felt weak, groggy and lethargic with a headache.

By Monday morning she was feeling a little better but still week, tired, lethargic and a headache around the temple.  Monday evening when we got back to town we took her to her local hostpital and they said her WBC was high and it was likely a viral infection and not a UTI.  They found no traces of bacteria in her urine sample that they took that day.  They checked the glands, and they didn't seem to be up.

We have not had sex since she's been feeling unwell so i cant say if penetration or not hurts and although I haven't asked her if she can see any signs, I have explained the probability that it could be hsv and so I can imagine she may well have looked, but i haven't.

Specifically on the back pain, when I asked her to point to it she would point to the lower spine / hip area to the right, but it hurt when i tapped her back above the hip and all the way over to the right side which is were i thought the kidneys were.

My concern is obvious, but my specific questions are these;

- Is it possible that this is an initial hsv infection, despite no sign of lesions yet (day 4) and no pain when urinating
- would an initial infection cause a headache around the temples, weekness, tiredness, lethargy & frequent urination without swollen glands and no known pain as yet (apart from lower back).
- Is it possible that a UTI spreads to the Kidney and doesn't cause any type of pain when urinating.
- Is it possible that there are no lesions on the initial  infection.
- Does this sound like a UTI that spread to the kidneys?
- Can the dr tell by looking at the Urine under a microscope without sending it to a lab to be cultured
- If they did see bacteria in the urine under the microscope, is this something you could expect with an initial hsv infection

She says she's feeling a lot better tonight and should feel %100 tomorrow (day 5).  I guess I am just concerned and would like a few things cleared up. If not for now, what to look out for in the future.

Sorry for the long message, trying to get all the information in there!

thanks so much, I appreciate the help.

Thanks grace.

She did continue her antibiotics, and finished the 5 day course last night. She is feeling a lot better with no signs of any sites but still a little lethargic and complaining of the sweats a little still at night. she has had a kidney infection before and said this felt much the same, just not as bad this time round.
She also says she has had cold sites around the mouth a few times and we have gone and gotten her a hsv type specific blood test to be sure.
Thanks so much for your support. It really is a great help

typically hsv1 genitally presents with very obvious and painful lesions that someone would see easily.  has she ever been tested to know her own status?

kidney infections will present with back pain and make you feel absolutely miserable. really nothing you've mentioned symptomwise sounds like anything other than that.  2 days of antibiotics might've already made it difficult to see signs of infection by the time she followed up with her regular provider. I hope she continued her antibiotics!
