Lazy Bowel?

I have had issues producing bowel movements since i was a child.  I found out recently that it was a problem from birth ( i was a premie baby 8 weeks early) , my mother used to stimulate my rectum in order for me to deficate.  It never seemed to bother me too much as a child or teenager, i didn't know that what i was feeling was wrong!!!  it was not something i cared to discuss...anyway , i am now 52, have been using a liquid glycerin laxative, not the capsule....for about 30 years now....and increasing its use in the past 5.  Now, sometimes it does not work at all, even though it has been 3 - 4 days of not going....I am pretty much in a constant state of bloating and pain...now, sometimes even after i deficate.  I have been to numerous Dr's whose answers have always been eat fiber fiber fiber........it kills me...i have tried and tried and tried...the longest is 10 days....i simply cannot function without going for 10 days!!!!!!!!!  Any suggestions...ideas...anything, i am desperate.  thanks........snoopyluvr

I was born with CP and I was also born at 5 months gestation.  When I was younger, I had to take a constant regimen of laxatives to get me to go to the bathroom.  This continued until I was 12 years old and things gradually started to improve until I didn't need any medication to help make me deficate, but about a month ago the same problem returned, and now it's worse than ever.  It hurts and I dread even attempting going to the bathroom.  I have spoken to my primary care physician and she prescribed something for IBS, but I still need to take a laxative and I still feel uncomfortable.  I am going to talk to a GI specialist to see what can be done.  It's to the point where it is effecting my quality of life because I feel too lethargic to do anything.  My husband is being supportive, but I'm in pain so I am getting angry at him with him for no reason.  Most people would never believe how much it hurts/ is aggravating to not go.  I'm sorry you have health problems, but it helps to know that I'm not the only one.

I have MS and have had this problem for 7 years now... I was to the point that I only had 1 or 2 bowel movements a month... I took stool softeners, laxatives, and suppositories constantly... My doctor finally put me on Amitiza 8MCG Capsules... I take 2 a day and they have been my miracle... No cramping or bloating at all and I'm having more bowel movements each month as this builds up in my system... I would suggest you ask your doctor about it and see what he/she thinks... Good luck to you,

Carol
