That's funny because I was wondering why your name was Jordyn28, you must be 28- duh. Sorry it's late...
Oh sorry. You wrote you were 18 weeks pregnant- not 18. Forget that part. Oops :)
Hi. I had an experience very similar to what you are going through.
I had a stone in my ureter that was too big to pass during a pregnancy. My doctor did not want to do a litho (because of the pregnancy), so I had a stent placed. You have heard right, stents are not the most comfortable things in the world (although some people do tolerate them and have no pain) but in any case it will bypass the stone so your kidney can function properly. Because I don't tolerate stents well, I was in the hospital for weeks with around the clock doses of Demerol and Phenergan. No it's never optimal to take medicine while you are pregnant but the stress the pain would cause you and the possibility of total kidney blockage which can cause kidney failure is even more risky. So you are making the right decision.
The one thing about taking narcotic meds (like Demerol) is that they can cause a baby's respiratory system to not fully develop. I finally had to be induced a couple weeks early due to the stent continuing to calcify and because I had another stone passing (I have a disorder called Medullary Sponge Kidney that cause multiple stones). They even did an amniocentesis to make sure the baby would be viable and make sure his lungs were developed. But after I gave birth and they handed him to me I could tell something wasn't right- they all thought I was imaging it but after a few minutes they could tell also. It turned out his lungs were not fully developed and he had to be intubated and put in the NICU where he stayed for two weeks. Yes it was scary and I spent every minute I could with him until he came home. But he is now a healthy 10 year old!
Hopefully you wont have the same experience I had but just know that if anything does come up, they have plenty of medical technology to help you and your baby have a good outcome. And I'm sure even more advances since my experience over ten years ago. It will all be ok- you will soon have a happy healthy baby.
You can send me a message if you have any questions. I was 23 when I had my ten year old but I had my first when I was 18 so I understand your situation being young and pregnant and having a kidney stone during a pregnancy too.
I hope I helped some. Try not to worry too much, relax and take care of yourself for your baby and it will turn out fine.
:) Liz
The stone must be large enough that it is causing obstruction. I had a stone also during
pregnancy however mine was small enough it passed. My larger stones
came soon after the birth of my babies. To stent or not to stent has many issues
on boths sides. They are concerned that without the stent it is possible the stone
obstructing is likely to cause some permanent kidney damage. I do know of a young mom recently with stones and pregnancy since she was in Africa they did not have the option of putting a stent in through out the pregnancy. They took the stone after she
had the baby with little problem other then living with the stone pain throughout her pregnancy.
Stents to some are easy to others more uncomfortable, stents can also increase infection, as well as get calcifications to form on them which is why they want to remove it frequently. I would highly recommend that you go to the nearest research hospital near you, and find the best stone specialist in your area and get their opinion.
Truthfully they are the ones who are going to be the most up to date on current research on stents the risks as well as the benefits and can best lead you in your decision.
Sorry i could not be more help! I do want to assure you, I remember having to have a KUB while pregnant and being in tears that they had to x-ray my baby.. the doc told them you get 1 shot! Now that x-ray of my precious daughter sitting cross legged in my pelvis is a special to me. I also remember an ER visit in pain when no one new what to do or what they could or could not give me... I told them to hit me over the head I did not care just stop the pain. I did have to have a shot of morphine, one.
My daughter is now 20, she was find and is now away at college doing well!
Hang in there!
Shelly
i had a stone when I was preggers, and it hurt like the dickens, but I passed it. However, i understand getting a stent is like last ditch effort. If lithotripsy will work, you should try it first...
