smooth muscle antibody (ASMA) false positive?

hi

i have a question aboutt the blood test for smooth muscle antibody (ASMA).

i had this test a while back and i was feeling very ill, i was positive but i believe it was fairly low, i was tested witht he same test a few weeks later and it was negative, the notes show this normally proves its somthing viral and not to do with the liver (i have had all other tests for liver and is fine now).

my question is, what viral infections or bacterial infections could cause this test to be positive, this will aid me into understanding what really caused me to go ill and will explain why my life was effected so much by it

thank you.

hi

thankyou for the reply, i was tested for hepatitis b and c, i dont think i was tested for hepatitis A, i had never been tested for mononucleosis, but i did suffer for many months of weakness and tiredness and flue like symoptoms.

so it could highly be a chance it was a mononucleosis, but it was newgative when i was tested a few months later and the report sauid this is normal in viral infections. At the time there was an outbreak of the swine flu in the UK, would you say that could possible cause a positive result in this too?

thank you so much, been a great help

Hello and hope you are doing well.

The ASMA levels are used to detect auto immune hepatitis and can be raised in viral infections, mostly viral hepatitis A, B & C.  It could also be raised in other conditions such as infectious mononucleosis.

Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
