Spots on lung

My wife was scheduled for knee replacement surgery and during her pre-op physical, a spot on her lung was noticed.
After a subsequent CT scan showed several spots, the largest bing 1.38 cm, her surgery was cancelled and now she is waiting for a PET scan.
She has been a moderate smoker for a long time, but never showed any signs of trouble.  She has had bronchitis a couple of times and other colds and flu.
Her doctor did say that lung cancer does not usually present itself in this way but they want to know what the causes for these spots are.
It has been a week since he first mentioned that she needed, the cat scan and now we have to wait longer.
I am just litterally worried sick.  Can't eat, stomach just churning constatantly, shortness of breath.
What are the chances that this is cancer?  And if it is, being found at this early stage, would the prognosis be favorable?
My wife is handling this better than I, but I know she is just as worried.  She is trying to stay busy I work.  I, have been disabled from a stroke twelve years ago and am not handling this very well.  We both are just 60, so we hopefully have several years remaining.  There is only one case of cancer in her family history, so that's a good sign, right?  Thanks.

I am so very happy about the news that her nodules were benign.  That is so great - it brings a smile to me.  Thanks for sharing - so sorry I haven't gotten back to you sooner but I have not been on line much - been working long hours.  Yes, God does answer prayers -

My CT Scan I had repeated last week showed no further progression in the nodules - which gave me a sign of relief too.

God bless you

Just wanted to let you all know that after the X-Ray>CT.scan>PET scan>and lung biopsy, NO malignancy was found.  They were benign.
We were so relieved, that the twenty thousand dollars in tests don't even seem significant.
They will do another CT scan in December, and another three months later,  to make sure that none of those spots are growing or changing in any other way.
Her knee replacement surgery is re-scheduled for next month, and we both can actually breath a sigh of relief for now.  But, we are still not out of the woods yet, but getting a lot closer to being out.
I want to thank all of you for your kind thoughts and words of encouragement.  I also firmly believe that our prayers and faith in God, got us through this.  No doubt in my mind.
I also want to wish all of you good luck with your situations and I will pray for you as well.  Put your trust in God and keep the faith.
Thanks again to every one of you.

My lung nodules were found while I was having a CT Scan for other reason - multiple nodules 3 - 7 mm.  The doctor insisted that I need another follow-up CT Scan in September - and now it is October and the doctor has not gotten back to me.

Nodules could be there because of many reasons - hoping the PET Scan is negative  for your wife. Please keep us posted.  And I will post after I get another CT Scan - my nodules are too small for a PET/Scan.

Hugs, Julie

I feel your pain... I am also on the same path - wating for the PET Scan to be scheduled... the waiting is the worst.  I've chosen to keep this from my family, only my husband knows-  I too, pray for god's healing hands to be among us all.  Not sure what to expect from a PET Scan...is it painless?

Thank-you so much for your kind words and your words of encouragement. Her PET scan is set for 7am tomorrow morning.
Today, she is just on complete rest and a restricted diet.   She is supposed to just act like a vegetable to day, doing absolutely nothing.
I think you understand quite well that the wait is just awful!  And with this being done tomorrow, we will have to wait through the long Labor Day weekend to get her results.
I have been told by friends to put my complete trust in God.
I have never been a overly religious man but do believe in Him.
One friend told me that I have the devil on one side suggesting all of these awful things that could happen, and then God on the other saying just about what you said to me.
From your comment, I cannot tell whether it is you or a loved one waiting for the PET/CT, but I wish you only good luck and hope you find some comfort in your waitng, as well.
God Bless you tater, and please keep me informed on how you are doing.  Good Luck

You're in my thoughts. I'm "waiting" for this PET/CT scan as well with all the same questions. I do know that if it is cancer and they've caught it early, she has a good, fighting chance. If all of her spots are 1.38cm and or smaller then that's a good sign as well. I hope you are able to find comfort in your wait time. Nodules on the lungs come from: infection, inflammation, and tumors. Fungus/mold can be the culprit as well. So try to keep hope and remember it could something other than cancer. Oh, and yes it is good that she doesn't have a family history of cancer. Good Luck to you both.
