Question about my herpes test results "past" "present"? what?

I called my doctor today to find out my results and they said i called a little early but they had my "past herpes" results which were negative, and they were still waiting on my "present herpes" results. i was wondering what this means? for the record the last time i had sex was a year ago and it was with my x girlfriend, and it was unprotected (only girl ive had unprotected with). ive had no signs or symptoms of herpes since then. i got the test just to make sure, kinda out of the blue. please help! sooo confused! thanks a lot
