i have an olde english bull dog and he is great with kids. he is still only a year old so a little wild he can be but the bull dog breed is great. they love sleeping and cuddling and do not need lots and lots of walking. i know my olde english bull dog and very protective of his house, he will bark and let you know if anyone is outside.
We actually have an spca really close, which is where we got our last 2 dogs, who were absolutely great. We go every Sunday and see what new dogs they have in. If a dog that looked promising came in we would absolutely bring it home. I would have to look if we had a rescue society around here, I haven't heard of one, but that's a great idea too.
don't be afraid of contacting a rescue organization... puppies are adorable but we got an amazing (and already trained) 3 yr old Golden through the rescue society-- he's every bit as wonderful as my 10yr old golden that I raised from puppyhood and I didn't have to deal with all the puppy chewing & potty training and other antics. The other advantage is you get to see the adult personality before you choose to adopt so you have a really great idea if the dog will be a good fit for your home.
I love beagles, for whatever reason they have to be my favorite dogs, but I also loved our old german shorthairs. We have a farm so there is plenty of room for a bigger dog, so I may start pushing for a nice chocolate lab. Maybe 2. I'm too afraid of losing a beagle because I know what wanderers they are, and like you Dani, I would find it chasing a fox or coyote.
I left you most of my opinion in your other post, but still wanted to vote here.
Looks like labs are in the lead by just a smidge. . . :)
I would vote for a lab too, or possibly a Burmese Mountain Dog. My SIL has 2 and I just love them, however they are prone to joint problems.
I have a Miniature Pinscher, and am really worried about how well he would do with a baby or child.
I love labs and they are great with kids!
I love my labs. I have two a chocolate and a yellow but I would make sure you get them as a pup, so you know what you are getting..
I do not recommend a Jack russell terrier...or as we call ours "Jack Russell terrorist" I personally will probably always have one, but in buying any dog, make sure you research what they are bread for. We found ours today trying to go after a coyote in our yard!!! I think the biggest thing I have learned is to research the environment they do best in so you can make an informed decesion! Good luck and let us know what you decide on!
Golden retrievers are usually wonderful with kids and their temperament is pretty consistent from dog to dog so it's generally a safe bet. That said, any can be destructive if they don't get enough exercise so just be prepared for a lot of walks.
