Can you tell me what this means?

I finally got copies from the hospital that my Lumbar Puncture was done, and I don't understand them.  I am typing them out for you here, in the hope that someone can tell me what it means.  The Neuro told me that I have elevated protein levels.

CSF TP            43.9     mg/dL     (15-45)
**Test performed at: WEST

CSF GLUC        47       mg/dL      (45-75)
**Test performed at: WEST

VDRL CEREBRAL SPINAL FLUID           NON REAC        Non REAC
VDRL TITER, CSF                                  NOT DONE         < 1:2
Because the VDRL was Non Reactive the VDRL titer was not performed.

CSF CELL COUNT
    VOLUME                                        6                            mL
      APPEARANCE                          CLEAR,COLORLESS
CSF RBC                                             0                           CU MM  (0-10)
CSF  WBC                                            0                           CU  MM (0-4)

GRAM STAIN
NO WBC'S SEEN  NO ORGANISMS SEEN

can anyone please decifer this for me?  There is no conclusion!!!

Hi,

I agree with those who've already posted.  I just wanted to add that some doctors will call a result elevated even when its within normal limits, but it is at the upper end.  Your total protein being 43.9 w/ the range 15-45 puts yours at the high end of normal.  It's still normal though.  Are you sure there aren't any other pages that deal with the LP?  There should be a note about the Oligoclonal bands, I agree.  When checking for any neurological condition they would be checked.  Look back through and see if there's another page.  Hope you find some answers soon.

Blessings, Jan

There were three pages of reports.  I don't know if there should have been more.  I don't even know what he ordered other than a lumbar puncture.  I feel like the hospital here is hell bent on making sure I DONT have ms.  Almost like they are covering their a$$.  The reports they have all sent to me say they are normal, but the nuero is telling me different things, so what the he@@???

I have recieved a copy of my mri (s) and I have had to ask for the TWICE.  The first time they didn't send all the images.  Seriously, what is their problem???  I see a specialist at the University of Utah on Monday, so hopefully it will help and I will definately find out SOMETHING.  If not ms, then WHAT?  I will deal with whatever, I just want to know what the whatever is, ya know???

I don't see any thing in this report about your O bands or your IgGs. Is this the complete report? You've just got your blood cell counts, glucose, and total protein. There should be some protein differentials, IgG info, index, etc. There is nothing outside the reference range in the data you've posted here, so if you've got elevated protein levels, there are more numbers somewhere...albumin, index, etc.

It means the test was basically normal. The VDRL was a test for syphilis, a clear and colorless appearance with no red or white blood cells is what shud b observed in healthy people and ofcorse no organisms is definitely a good thing.
