Finally, a neurologist! Remember when Oz was on Oprah and said something along the lines that the leading cause of death in MS was due to suffocation from the MS hug? Even a cardiothoracic  surgeon ought to know better than that.

I hope your man in Havana can steer Dr Oz away from the jaw-dropping nonsense he usually spouts. I'll be rooting for him!

Dr. Oz is beyond strange. Some of what he talks about is good science, and some sounds like it originated with a witch doctor. Just bizarre. So I don't watch his show.

He appeals to the irrational side of people like Oprah, who believe in The Secret, and other such hooey. Oprah also once claimed she 'blew out her thyroid.' I wouldn't care or comment, except that this kind of thing might hurt members of the public who hang onto their every word.

In most ways Oprah is admirable. If she'd just stop talking about stuff she knows nothing about, I'd have nothing to grouch about in regard to her. Oz is another kettle of fish, because he certainly does know better, and is an extremely intelligent and capable man, by and large. But the bilge he spouts at times is incredible.

Meredith Vieira and her husband are always worth seeing when they discuss MS. I hope they get to correct any off the wall assertions by Oz, together with Kyle's neuro, of course. Will look here later for a report.

PS--  Dr. Nancy Snyderman is even worse when it comes to talking about MS. She is clueless, but that's never stopped her. Always makes me wonder what else she gets wrong on the 99.99% of medical topics that I'm not knowledgeable enough to evaluate. I assume that if she can't get 3 sentences about MS right, she is likely be talking nonsense about lots of other things too.

Okay, off my TV doctor soapbox. I will be good for the rest of the day.

Caught this episode this afternoon. Very interesting info about the stem cell study that Cohen is participating in. The discussion about that, including comments from Sadiq, and the discussion about misconceptions about MS were very good.

I completely understand Cohen's and Vieira's reluctance to get too excited at this point, saying that expectations are dangerous, and not wanting to have too much hope and then be disappointed,given his SPMS status, 40 years with the disease, and considerable degree of disability. The doc said that he likes Cohen as a study subject because he's cynical and he doesn't expect anything. My perspective is in line with that way of thinking.  It's encouraging that this and other research is happening and that obviously many strides have been made and continue to be made regarding disease modifying treatment.  But I also am careful about hoping for too much too soon, to avoid disappointment. I don't subscribe to the kind of magical thinking as in The Secret (that Ess happened to mention above re: Oz). That if only I hope / think / wish / pray for 'the cure', that such thoughts will make it happen. This to me is so foolish, naive and a bit infantile. I have no doubt that one or more caring friends will be emailing tonight to fill me in on this episode with great excitement, with plenty of exclamation points!!!!!!  While I always appreciate the goodwill behind the gesture, I am quietly annoyed that they don't actually make any effort to better understand the realities, nor really listen to what's being said in terms of this being very experimental, early in the process, with no real information at this point about whether it will even work. I got a pile of emails about the so-called liberation treatment, and I still have people asking me if I'm going to do it (no thanks, one acquaintance blew through her life savings to no avail, while another had a stroke as a result and is now severely disabled because of it).

So, yes, good segment, good info, presented guardedly and honestly.

As for the usual cheap props Oz is so fond of (in this case, dominoes) and silly games (a corny quiz for Vieira who is turning 65), he could do without those. They detract from his credibility, and they insult the intelligence of his guests and viewers. Cohen, Vieira and Sadiq are all accomplished and clearly very bright. That lame quiz made me cringe and wonder what they must be thinking.

I have a friend who is doing the stem cell thing with Sadiq. She was talking about it this week. I missed Dr. Oz. I wanted to see this Dr. Sadiq everyone in NC is talking about. I was coming home from chemo so I guess that is a good enough excuse.

I kinda liked the domino thing :-) A pretty basic, graphic representation of what goes on in our lesion encrusted central nervous systems.

One thing that OZ did that annoyed me was to continually try to lump MS, and sadiq's research in with every other spine related issue. Sadiq is all MS all the time!

Sadiq is the best . He has a a great sense of humor and does not ever try to blow smoke up your skirt. I'm seeing him next Thursday for my 6 month/6000 mile check up.

I'm sorry that I missed this. I wonder if it's online. I actually like Dr. Oz. I think that he has a lot of good information on health and wellness and preventative information. But just like treatments and medications, people need to choose to believe what they want and leave what they don't.

Good stuff, Kyle. Thank you for updating this with the link. As a member outside the States, I really appreciate that.

I quite liked your doctor. It's such important research he's doing. He didn't seem interested in any sort of 'hard sell', rather discussing the state of play this side of research is in. Exciting stuff, without being in the clouds.

I make no bones about not caring for Dr Oz's approach to much involving the platform he has, but I did quite like the example with the dominos and the bells. Something that simple can really get a point across in such a simple, effective way.

I don't have TV, and the few times I've seen Dr. Oz on a patient's TV while setting up my echo machine in their room, I immediately wanted to turn him off!  That said, I will go look at the links you posted.

I'd love to do the stem cell thing if and when they've had some larger more conclusive studies.  In the mean time, I'll follow this with great interest.

This might sound a bit immature but I followed the link & watched everything but where's the game he suggested they play.

I will be following Richard M. Cohen to see how he goes with the stem cell treatment.
